Gap has increased the minimum wage for employees to $10 per hour. Below are the comments from their website.

Early this morning, we notified all our employees that starting here in the U.S., Gap Inc. will make a strategic investment to do more for our employees by increasing the minimum hourly rate for our employees to $9 in 2014 and $10 in 2015. This will ultimately benefit about 65,000 store employees.

To us, this is not a political issue. Our decision to invest in frontline employees will directly support our business, and is one that we expect to deliver a return many times over.

The people in our company who engage directly with our customers carry an incredible responsibility. Our success is a result of their hard work, love of fashion and commitment. We hope this decision provides them with some additional support as they grow their careers with Gap Inc.

The Wet Seal, Inc, a leading specialty retailer to young women, announced last week that retail veteran Lesli Gilbert has been appointed Executive Vice President, Stores and Operations, effective immediately. Ms. Gilbert replaces Barbara Cook, former Senior Vice President, Store Operations, who resigned in February.

The Fashion Job Search website went under a bit of a face lift today.  In the career by state section, we have added a "discussion" area below the job listings.  Yes, you can use +Google+ to login and post comments.  In all honesty, we are not sure if the discussion area will be of assistance to fashionistas hunting for employment.  However, we figured we would give it a try.  Hopefully, people will login with their G+ account and help each other out.  The goal is experienced members of the fashion community to help the new people that have suggestions regarding interviewing tips, what is work appropriate clothing, etc.  Anyway, we hope it is of help to the industry...

Mount Vernon Mills is proud to announce Carolyn Black, a 20 year veteran of the textile industry, has joined the company as FR Technical Specialist. In her new role with Mount Vernon Mills, she will focus on the company’s flame resistant fabric brand, Mount Vernon FR. Her goal will be to increase Mount Vernon FR brand awareness among end users, especially in the Canadian provinces.

Over the course of her career, Black has sharpened her skills through work with various well-known companies, including Bulwark, DuPont Canada and Shell Canada Limited, as a customer relationship and marketing specialist.  Most recently, as a marketing specialist at MWG Apparel, her emphasis was on customer relationship service and development. Black graduated with a bachelor’s degree in science from the University of Calgary, where she also minored in business. In addition, she has completed numerous other postgraduate courses in the areas of textile design, personal leadership, project management, architectural and industrial design, and client relationship development. She is also knowledgeable in Computer-aided Design (CAD), and has five years of experience using the system.

   “Carolyn brings to Mount Vernon Mills an integral combination of marketing success and technical expertise,” said Mike Woods, vice president of flame resistant fabric sales for Mount Vernon Mills. “Her experience in the textile industry will be a great asset to the company and will play a major role in driving Mount Vernon FR’s continued growth.”

Black’s appointment comes at a time of growth for the company and brand, as Mount Vernon Mills last year unveiled their new branding initiative for Mount Vernon FR. The brand consists of six flame resistant fabric collections of various blends, from cotton to nylon, Nomex® and more. The expansive line makes Mount Vernon FR perfect for multiple end uses in professions requiring high quality protective clothing. 

 

Ascena Retail Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASNA) this week announced that Erin Stern has accepted the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Merchandising Officer with their maurices brand effective April 15, 2013. maurices (based in Duluth, MN) is an 860-store chain serving a twenty-something female (sizes 0-24) in small- and mid-markets. 

David Jaffe, President and CEO of the Ascena Retail Group, commented, “Erin is an outstanding merchant with a strong strategic vision and understanding of this customer. Erin is an exceptional hire for this role.” 

The Jones Group Inc. this week announced that it has appointed Greg Clark to the position of Chief Marketing Officer, effective immediately. Mr. Clark will report to Stefani Greenfield, Chief Creative Officer, and will oversee global marketing and brand identity for the Company's portfolio of fashion brands. 
"We are excited to welcome Greg and his unique set of skills and expertise to The Jones Group to implement our vision of marketing as we continue the expansion of our fashion brands," said Stefani Greenfield, Chief Creative Officer of The Jones Group. Prior to joining JCPenney, Mr. Clark held executive creative and marketing positions at various retailers including Toys 'R'Us, Marshall Fields, and Lane Bryant.

Fashionista in training caught sleeping on the job?

 Ascena Retail Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASNA) today announced that Linda Heasley has accepted the position of President and CEO of Lane Bryant effective February 18, 2013. 

Ms. Heasley joins ascena’s Lane Bryant division after six years as President and CEO of The Limited. During her time with The Limited, Ms. Heasley has revamped store product lines; introduced new brand positioning; launched e-commerce; commissioned a new store design; introduced a new plus-size brand, inaugurated a new national advertising campaign and returned The Limited to sustained profitability for the first time in 17 years. 

In addition to her experience at The Limited, Ms. Heasley has held numerous senior leadership roles at Timberland, Limited Brands, Inc. and CVS. She holds an AB degree from Harvard Radcliffe College and earned her MBA at the John Anderson School of Management, UCLA. 

David Jaffe, President and CEO of the Ascena Retail Group, commented, “A very focused search process was conducted and the organization was able to attract a number of highly qualified candidates.
