Katusha, the team with the top world tour (WT) points earner (J-Rod) from 2012 is no longer a WT team in 2013!? As yet, we don’t know why.
It is possible, but unlikely, that Katusha screwed up the process in an irredeemable way. However, the best speculation I’ve heard so far is that this is a UCI trick to get around the 18 team WT limit. If Katusha is a Pro Conti team in 2013 with J-Rod on their roster, they are practically guaranteed entry into WT races. The onus is now on race organizers to decide which teams participate.
2012: WT (18 teams) + Wildcard teams (2/3 usually)
2013: WT (18 teams) + Katusha + wildcard team(s) http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/katusha-denied-2013-worldtour-licence
