ARIK BJORN HAS BEEN ENDORSED BY THE SOUTH CAROLINA DEMOCRATIC PARTY!

HERE IS HIS SPEECH TO THE SOUTH CAROLINA DEMOCRATIC PARTY EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE.

...

I have managed billion-dollar programs; worked with governors, senators, industry leaders; shepherded legislation; turned policy into reality. But nothing has helped me understand the complexity of government as much as explaining it to my young daughter.

Whether my daughter and I are discussing the Confederate Flag, national healthcare, or Presidential campaigns, so many of our conversations conclude, “So you see, there’s a better way.”

My daughter has a bright mind. She heard that phrase enough times that eventually she asked, “Then why don’t you try to show people a better way?”

And that, essentially, is why I stand before you this evening. Thank you for this opportunity to earn your trust. “There’s a Better Way!”

Dear Reader: in 2016, history speaks to us. Those who have spent their lives studying the pages of history, those who have their ears to the ground in the halls of politics, feel a moral obligation to repeat and revise the exhortations of Irmgard Litten and Martin Niemöller.

What is the point of reminding ourselves, time and again as we have for the past century, that those who ignore history are destined to repeat it—if we don’t actually act when that history unfolds right before our very eyes?

ACT. NOW.

For the country you love, the society in which you live, the everyday existence that you know, will never be the same if Donald Trump becomes President of the United States.

He is a fast-track fascist to the White House. And your vote—your volunteer hours—your contributions—are the only thing standing in his way.

So please: STAND. IN. HIS. WAY.

What an honor to begin the week by learning BJORN FOR CONGRESS has received an endorsement by the South Carolina Green Party.  We are truly humbled and honored.

We will use this endorsement, along with our South Carolina AFL-CIO endorsement, as effective progressive tools to improve conditions throughout SC's 2nd Congressional District, throughout our state, and throughout our nation.

With this #SCGP endorsement, we will be especially diligent in working to sustain our environment.

BJORN FOR CONGRESS ON ENVIRONMENTALISM

The Environment is such a monumental, and often controversial, subject that perhaps a fresh political perspective is in order.

A famous scientist once referred to our planet as a Pale Blue Dot.  This is a reference to a photo of Earth taken by the Voyager I space probe just before it exited the solar system.  As one sees our fleck of a planet from 4 billion miles away, one is moved by a sacred duty to care-take the small corner in which we find ourselves.

At times, it is easy to lose awe for our planet.  But we must renew our respect and responsibility for the Earth and everything in it.

Timber, agriculture, fisheries, and of course tourism—these are major state industries that depend on environment stewardship.  We’ve all seen the economic and mortal consequences on humans and nature alike when water resources, air quality, and mining operation conditions are neglected.  The citizens of SC Congressional District 2 need to approach the preservation and maintenance of our natural resources, our home, with deliberate care.

That isn’t just philosophy and stargazing—it’s business common sense.  And it’s a common sense that “Status Quo” Joe has lacked his entire decade-plus in office.  This is why the League of Conservation voters has awarded “Status Quo” Joe a Lifetime Failing Score, and in 2015 downgraded him all the way to 0%.  If “Status Quo” Joe doesn’t care about our planet, does he really care about you?

VOTE BLUE & GREEN.  VOTE BJORN JUNE 14.

My remarks to the 2016 South Carolina Democratic Party Convention:

My fellow Democrats, the barbarians aren’t at the gate.  They own the gate.  But I am not going to sit around in a seersucker suit sipping sweet tea while my neighborhood, my city, my county, my district, my state, my environment—my home—is destroyed.

What separates Democrats from Republicans is our foundational belief that Government is Good.  We are Government.  And when "We the People" do our job—to link and protect individuals, communities, and industry—Government is a positive, powerful force.

Colleagues, the job before us is indeed herculean.  It is epic. Let us roll up our sleeves, now, and in the days leading up to the JUNE 14 PRIMARY—and then to November 8 and beyond.

“There’s a Better Way!”  Let us blaze a trail of progress together.

The world is filled with self-centered men and women.  But we are other-centered.  We are the builders of Civilization.  The work before us is monumental.  When we retire this evening, after our long weekend of progressive politicking, let us remember:

--300,000 of our poorest neighbors in South Carolina remain in a state of unnecessary suffering—some will die this very day—because Governor Haley refuses to lift a pen to Expand Medicaid.
--Nearly 300,000 South Carolina children are considered “food insecure.”
--Nearly 20% of our South Carolina neighbors live in poverty. South Carolina’s household income is 20% lower than the U.S. average.
--We have enough high school dropouts in our state to overflow Williams-Brice Stadium.

Meanwhile, a phalanx of elephants, the likes of which we have not seen since the days of Hannibal, surrounds.  Haley.  Scott.  Graham.  Sanford.  Duncan.  Gowdy.  Mulvaney.  Rice.  A Republican-controlled General Assembly.  And worst of all, “Status Quo” Joe Wilson—the Legislative Henchman of the One Percent—who, after 8 terms and 15 years, has brought us nothing but shame and a nickname.

My fellow Democrats, the barbarians aren’t at the gate.  They own the gate.  But I am not going to sit around in a seersucker suit sipping sweet tea while my neighborhood, my city, my county, my district, my state, my environment—my home—is destroyed.

At the end of the day, it's all about the ISSUES.

I stand firmly as the only real Democrat running for South Carolina's 2nd Congressional District.  Here is where I stand on issues that matter to our District:

LIVING WAGE / WORKERS RIGHTS

I am the only candidate endorsed by the South Carolina #AFLCIO.

I support collective bargaining, as well as the elimination of #righttowork laws.  I support the expansion of employment protections for working families, and I support legislation that provides an indexed #livingwage for American workers, as well as overtime protection.

I support the WAGE Act, introduced by Sen. Patty Murray (WA) and Rep. Bobby Scott (VA). The bill strengthens worker protections, and makes it easier for workers to fight for higher wages and improved workplace conditions.  If we don't rebuild collective bargaining, U.S. workers and families will continue to lose out on the economic progress their hard work creates.

HEALTHCARE

#Healthcare is a human right.  It is evil for Governors to refuse to expand Medicaid.  Blood is on their hands.  I support an efficient national healthcare plan that provides coverage for all and that works to improve public health.  I support the creation of efficient, shared learning health systems.

HUMAN RIGHTS

Black. Lives. Matter.  Period.  The #BlackLivesMatter movement needs no further qualification, and I am a full supporter.

I am an outspoken LGBTQ Ally.  I fully support #LGBTQ equality legislation.  I support same-sex marriage.  And I am appalled by SC Senator Lee Bright's barbaric bathroom bill.

For-profit prisons are immoral.  The national incarceration rate must be significantly reduced.  Inmate education and workforce reintroduction are keys to reducing recidivism.

INFRASTRUCTURE

The overall state of our national #infrastructure—from waterways to electrical grids to highway systems—is failing.  Investing in a 21st-century infrastructure backbone must be a primary consideration for the next Representative of SC Congressional District 2.  I support a “WPA Part 2” national infrastructure program that puts all of the U.S. back to work--as well as other programs that support Full Employment.

EDUCATION

We must fully fund PK-12 education and support the work of our heroic teachers and education leaders, who are preparing our students for life beyond high school.

I strongly support debt-free higher education.  The difference between a high school diploma and college degree is nearly $1 million over the course of one's career.  We must create collaboration pathways for higher education and industry—doing so always leads to innovation and increased jobs.  Governmental student loan debt forgiveness programs should be increased.

INTERNET ACCESS

1 in 4 U.S. households have no Internet access.  40% of U.S. classrooms still lack broadband access.  As a librarian, I keenly recognize that preventing millions of citizens from Information Age access stunts our nation and hinders our prosperity.  I strongly support President Obama's #ConnectED and #ConnectHome initiatives.

ENVIRONMENT

Timber, agriculture, fisheries, and of course tourism—these are major state industries that depend on environment stewardship.  We have seen the economic and mortal consequences on humans and nature alike when water resources, air quality, and mining operation conditions are neglected.  The citizens of SC Congressional District 2 need to approach the preservation and maintenance of our natural resources, our home, with deliberate care.

FAIR TRADE

I do not support international fair trade agreements that leave the U.S. middle class in the proverbial dust.  Fair trade must be balanced with education, employment, and innovation support to the full U.S. labor force.  I support global worker rights; fair trade built on the back of international labor abuse is immoral.

WALL STREET

Congress must reform Wall Street.  I support the taxation of Wall Street speculation and the creation of a 21st-century Glass-Steagall Act.

RETIREMENT SECURITY

I support increasing Social Security benefits.  I do not support the replacement of Social Security benefits with individual investment accounts.

IMMIGRATION

I support immigration reform and recognize immigration as a cornerstone of American Democracy.  I will oppose legislative efforts to scapegoat immigrant groups.  I will legislative from a position of:  “Give me your tired, your poor.”

VOTE BJORN JUNE 14.  Your vote in our state primary truly matters.
