"The Misty Meadows.."

Shot near Taumarunui, North Island, NZ

The Sun breaking through the heavy early morning mist.

Just a cool scene I saw as I was driving by. Luckily this time there was a place to pull over in a very convenient and safe place. On road trips sometimes moments appear and disappear in a matter of seconds when you are driving and more often than not there is never anywhere to safely stop the car. On this occasion I was lucky, the thistles in the foreground were a nice addition to what I had seen previously.

I didn't know that, since 2007, 16th June has been Sussex Day. Apparently it's the feast day of St Richard of Chichester, the patron saint of Sussex.

Happy Sussex Day

For Neil Finn's birthday, 27th May.

Had a really great evening at Nottingham three weeks ago.  It was good to hear songs from Split Enz to Dizzy Heights, via Crowded House, Finn Brothers, solo...

I went on an organised cycle ride around Leicester recently to see places associated with suffragettes such as Alice Hawkins.

I've voted today.

1884: Any man occupying property worth more than £10 can vote
1918: All men over 21 and women over 30 given the vote.
1928: All women over 21 given the vote
1948: Universal Declaration of Human Rights includes the right to vote
1969: Voting age reduced to 18.
A lot has happened for us all to get the vote. Use yours today.

This is not an easy video to watch. But torture doesn't work. Victims will say anything to make it stop.

There is an episode of Star Trek: The  Next Generation which raises this issue: "Chain of Command"  I was impressed with Patrick Stewart's performance the first time I saw it. It's influenced by Orwell's 1984, and like the +Amnesty International video, not easy to watch. It graphically portrays the futility of torture.

Today we launch our global #StopTorture campaign. Oscar nominated director Sylvain Chomet has created this video to expose the brutality of torture, which is reaching global crisis. http://bit.ly/1hHyyNU

I have seen a few small tortoiseshell butterflies this spring. They'd become a rare site around here. There have been peacock butterflies, too. And the nettles are growing well in some places! .

Nettles can support over 40 species of insect, including some of our favourite butterflies.

Free! We've had confirmation from Meriam Ibrahim's lawyers that she is free and with her husband, after an appeal court found her 'not guilty' of both apostasy and adultery. Thank you all so much for taking action - over 200,000 of you here in the UK, and more than a million worldwide. Your pressure has paid off. Thank you.

It's been good to know where your towel is for many years - this is 14th century Italy. I'm not sure if that is a monkey sitting on the table - perhaps taking a break from writing Hamlet?

I always keep a towel in my car.  I do forget to stash a bag of salted peanuts.

Meriam Yehya Ibrahim is eight months pregnant. She has been sentenced to death for simply being a Christian and 100 lashes for marrying a christian man. She must be released immediately.
Say NO to executing Meriam Yehya Ibrahim! http://bit.ly/1t0usaH

Introduction
Acweorna or aquorna is the Old English word for squirrel.  It's linked to the name I used when I first went online in 1994.  It's also the root of 'Acorn', the name of the company that made one of the first computers I used, the BBC B.

Interests: Astronomy. Science, natural history, history of science and technology - railways!, history in general.
