I used to go to Burroughs. I wish I had known I could write a review back then. I will not say I rate them as Poor only because there are a few good things about it...Fair would be more appropriate... The reasoning's for my "grade" for them is as follows: Negative: -My first day, there was a Sniper or Bomb threat on the school...They "evacuated" us all, all 2700+ students and teachers, to field (the old one) exposing us to the heat right under the sun. And it was 102+ degrees outside. Only certain people were given tents. Only certain people had access to the water. We were outside for 2 hours....I was not used to California heat yet so it started to take a toll on me to the point that another student was kind enough to hold my head up and share water with me. They would not let parents take their kids....some kids started climbing over the fences to leave...My mom had to wait to get me...and to this day, I do not understand why they had us out in the open if it was a threat on the school... -Their daily lunch is terrible...where I am from, we have an A, B, and C lunch, where different Class Subjects go to lunch for a period of time, then the next group goes. At Burroughs, all 2700+ students run down at the same time...You are SOL if you are on the third floor trying to run down all the stairs to go buy lunch...the first 3 days of school I went with out food because they ran out before I could even get there... -It is in my strong opinion that the students are not educated enough in Black History. The students (when I was still relatively new to the school) decided to have an Ebonics Day. I did not understand what was going on until I asked, but another student explained it is when everyone "Acts like they are Black". Burroughs doesn't even have Black History Month. A few students seem to think the term "Negro" or the N word means to be Ignorant, or as a form of friendship. Their lack of knowledge in Black history, in my opinion, creates racial ignorance...whether they realize what they say is racial or not... -Students have to pay an arm and a leg to be in Chorus... -There are no lockers for students to hold their things they have to carry all their stuff around all day. I feel that this is an issue, because I actually would get back pain from all the heavy books that I would have to carry... Positive: -The teachers know their craft, and most of them have great personality and really know how to reach out to some of the kids. Compared to my old school, I saw major improvements in my grades. -They have good activities and after school programs to keep students proactive and creative. -They have on site security. -Encourage healthy eating. So it's not that it is a "bad" school, I just feel that the negative reasoning's I gave were major issues from my personal experience to not see it as an "Excellent" school.
