On this day in 1958, the National Aeronautics & Space Administration began operations.

On July 29th, 1958, ten months after Sputnik 1 was launched into orbit, President Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act establishing NASA as a civilian space agency. The new agency absorbed the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, including its budget, resources and personnel. Prior to the formation of NASA, space exploration was considered to be largely military enterprise. NASA would begin operations on October 1, 1958.

Drone Racing: The hottest new craze for gamers, geeks and nerds?

And why not? It sure looks like fun!!! ABC News Australia offers a peek into the world of underground quadcopter racing, a growing sport in the land down under where pilots use special goggles that stream a live feed from tiny camera to allow the pilot to race in the first-person-view. The pilots are able to control the drones as if they were actually sitting inside of them, whizzing around at 60 miles-per-hour.

First Person View (FPV) Racing is currently considered one of the next big things, gaining in popularity and there are even talks about even becoming a full-blown organized sport. Judging from the videos, it’s not too difficult to see why.

“It’s like playing a video game. It’s fast. The more you do it the more you want to fly,” said drone hobbyist Darren French. “It’s definitely becoming a sport as we start to race more, [and in more places]. Like any sport, it evolves, so I’m looking forward to it becoming more professional.” And in fact, it already has been: the U.S. will host its first National FPV Drone Championships in July – a competition that boasts a $10,000 grand prize.

It's funny, for all my years of experience, I am still finding simple advice like this is worth so much. It's about half-way through the year but I suppose it's never to late to make a new year's resolution. Perhaps going forward, I'll just take 5.
