As part of what seems to be becoming a series of magazine covers, here's a collection of OMNI covers that I put together this morning. They were very easy to do so I could play around with them. They get sillier as they go to the right and down but none of them is particularly serious. Scribus and GIMP were used as usual. (Apologies for the low resolution but the image is quite large in area. If anyone wants to see a higher-res version of any of them then just tell me and I'll post a link.)  Constructive criticism and suggestions are, as usual, welcome but I'm not sure if I'll be taking anything here further - I was just messing around.

notes of interest from a LGM workshop (more a mutual interview) with Loraine Furter about specimens:

- specimens are evaluation tools for type designers and promotion material for fonts. that creates dissimilar and overlapping needs (e.g. the promotion material is still evaluated for good-font qualities by typographers);
- in specimens certain words/phrases are used (e.g. ‘Technics SL-1200’) that are related to the vibe of the font; this is used both by the designer of the font and in promotional material;
- Loraine’s main point: the text in the specimen can be also the story of this font; we can do some nice things there from our data, for instance showing the linage (“font Aap was derived from Noot, which was from Mies, which was from Teun.”, or summarise (in BIG lines) the parameter settings that make this master, or the mix that makes this instance (and let’s keep thinking beyond the technical).

During +Libre Graphics Meeting last week in Toronto our very own +Jehan Pagès announced a new open animated movie project, ZeMarmot. It's a road movie with a marmot as protagonist.

The team will be using just free/libre applications for the production: GIMP, Blender, Ardour, and a few others. Jehan will also resume his work on animation features in GIMP, extend OpenRaster file format to support animation, and improve Blender's non-linear video editor as much as he can.

You can support the campaign at IndieGoGo.
