Yesterday at breakfast my 8-year-old asked me how old the universe was. I told him that I read it's 13.8 billion years old. Then he asked me how they know when it started. That was a bit harder, but I think I managed. Then he asked what it looked like at the beginning. I think I completely lost him there. Infinite density and temperature? All those galaxies and moons and stars compressed to one tiny dot? It made no sense to him. Probably because I'm not too good at physics and don't really understand the detailseven though I know the theory. Does anyone have an explanation of the big bang my kid could understand?
