"Can I use a third party SFP with my switch or router"? The short answer is yes! One common misconception is that using third party transceivers will invalidate your product warranty, but that's just wrong.

Our full range of SFP and SFP+ transceivers at https://rapidoptics.com.au can be purchased with the peace of mind of a full 3 year warranty, 30 day compatibility guarantee and no impact to your equipment warranty.

To take Cisco as an example, here's an extract from Cisco's Third Party Warranty Policy:

"When a product fault or defect occurs in the network, and Cisco concludes that the fault or defect is not attributable to the use of third-party memory, cables, GBICs, filters, or other non-Cisco components installed by a customer or reseller, Cisco will continue to provide support for the affected product under warranty or covered by a Cisco support program." (Retrieved 13 May 2017 from http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/prod_warranty09186a00800b5594.html)

Our advice? If possible, have a couple of genuine parts available to swap out should any link issues occur - just to eliminate the possibility that the third party SFP is at fault. It probably isn't at fault, but your vendor support might insist that you use a genuine part to eliminate the SFP as the problem.

You might be wondering how we can offer such great prices on SFP/SFP+ optical transceivers compared to the OEM brands. The answer is because we aren't ripping you off!

SFPs are standardised to meet multi-source agreements (MSAs) which specify precisely the expected functionality of the SFP/SFP+ transceiver. You can read more about MSA's on Wikipedia or just by googling "MSA SFP". This means that SFPs should be interchangeable between brands (including third party SFPs).

Most of the large OEM vendors, however, program specific information onto the EEPROM of the SFP chip and then program their switches and routers to check for that coding. This coding works as a vendor lock-in, to stop people from being able to use third party SFPs. A Cisco router will, for example, refuse to use an 'unsupported transceiver' if you plug in an Intel SFP.

You should be free to choose where you buy your SFP and SFP+ transceivers. RapidOptics provides a range of SFPs/SFP+ modules that meet all the relevant MSA standards and are additionally coded to work seamlessly with your products, whether you've got Cisco, HP, Dell or Juniper equipment.

A few OEM manufacturers (e.g., Mikrotik, Dlink, Netgear) don't require any vendor specific coding - and good on them for doing so! We are able to offer "generic" SFPs that will work with these brands as well as many other.

Any questions? Reach out to our team at RapidOptics.com.au. We're here to help!
