ELVIS and the Band, Bill Black, Scotty Moore had just returned the Memphis. Louis & I were out front throwing the Football, When ELVIS pulled up on his Harley. He ask Louis where his Dad was & Louis replied, He just went to the Store, He will be back soon. The three of us formed a triangle and continued to throw the ball. ELVIS stopped and held the Ball and said, "When he returns I want you and Stevie to ride out to see what I'm buying for my MaMa, I said, What did you buy her ELVIS? he said, NO, I want ya'll to see it! We all piled into the 1953 Bel-Air Chevy with Bill Black driving, Evelyn his wife at his side, and Nancy there Daughter in Shotgun. Louis, ELVIS and I were in the back Seat. I was only a small kid of 7 or 8 years old, so I kept saying, ARE WE THERE YET, ELVIS! He kept saying, just be patient Stevie, we have a ways to go. Finally we can up on this GRAVEL Road and ELVIS said, slow down we are almost there, turn right here and go down this way a few miles and while we were driving, Bill pulled over, due to all of the pot holes and rough ride and strapped the BASE on the roof down a little tighter with some additional ropes. After a few more minutes ELVIS said slow down and turn up to the TOP of this Hill we pulled up to this huge House and ELVIS said, Yep, This is it, Everybody get out, I'm Going to call this place "GRACELAND" My Moma is going to love this place. we took the TOUR and another car came pulling up and ELVIS pulled an ED SULLIVAN Check out of his Top pocket, Endorsed the back, and PAID CASH FOR GRACELAND right in front of all of us. After the tour of where ELVIS told us all as to what he was planning to add-on we piled back into the Car and started home. Then Evelyn turn around and said ELVIS, Why did you spend that whole paycheck on that place? You know Scotty & Bill has Bill's to pay, just like you. ELVIS Replied, That Check was made out to me and I'll spend it on any thing I want. Bill and Scotty have a new contract with Colonel Parker and they get paid by him, not by me anymore. That is when the "Bill Black Combo" was born, "White Silver Sands" was their first single Hit that went to #1 and it was the first instrumental Song to ever reach that point. Louis and I as best friends enjoyed GRACELAND for many years while The Band stayed together, Bill Black passed away when I was 15 years old and ELVIS didn't attend the funeral, he came over to Bill's house across the street from our house on Pikes Peak Ave and told Evelyn, Nancy, and Louis to get into his Cadillac and he took them to a home out on N. Watkins and Paid Cash for it and gave them the keys and told them all that he didn't want them to have any memories of the old house that he was going to have a pool, tennis courts, pinball machines, etc... just like all the stuff he had added to GRACELAND added to the new home of the Black family. Nearly everytime I was visiting Louis and enjoying the fun times, ELVIS would come by and he and Evelyn would go upstairs and disappear for hours, before ELVIS would come back down and play with us before he would head back to GRACELAND! FUN MEMORIES!
