We often get visitors to FurnaceCompare that ask who's to blame when their new furnace dies.  So, we talked with a number of contractors to try to understand when the fault lies with the manufacturer, and when it lies with the installing contractor.

Do you know the life expectancy of your furnace?  According to the NAHB, furnaces last 15 - 20 years, heat pumps: 16 years and air conditioners: 10 - 15 years. (Hat tip to This Old House)

One last, interesting note: solar panels are following Moore's Law.  At current rates of cost / performance improvement, electricity from solar will be as cheap as electricity from coal in about 5 years (around 2018).  In about 10 years (at current rates of improvement) solar could be half the cost of coal.
