The Diversity Programs in Engineering office operates programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and faculty levels to facilitate the outreach, recruitment, retention, and overall success of all members of the College of Engineering community, but especially those from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in Engineering including, but not limited to women, underrepresented minorities, and first generation college students.

Cornell named a mentoring center by Sloan Foundation. Cornell has been awarded a three-year, $1.2 million grant to become one of three new University Centers of Exemplary Mentoring (UCEM), the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation announced July 31.Cornell’s program, managed by Diversity Programs in Engineering, will provide three years of stipend support and additional support for research and professional development to 27 new underrepresented minority Ph.D. students in engineering and applied life science fields. Obama cites DPE with mentoring award President Barack Obama cited Cornell's Diversity Programs in Engineering among the four individuals and four other organizations to receive the 2011 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. The announcement was made Nov. 15. The mentors will receive their awards at a White House ceremony later this year. The award recipients will receive $25,000 from the National Science Foundation to advance their mentoring efforts.
