How to Increase Your Home Security

Your home encompasses everything that you value: your loved ones, possessions and memories.  A break-in can violate all of that.  Whether you initiate your own defensive measures, or hire a professional security company to install an alarm system, you can easily increase your home security to obtain peace of mind.  Practice these safety tips to prevent a burglary in your home.

Lock Doors and Windows.

The Washington Post reported that the typical thief wants to spend 60 seconds or less breaking into a house.  Take precaution before leaving the house by properly securing doors and windows.  First floor entry points are particularly vulnerable.  To increase your home security:

1. Install deadbolt locks on front and back doors.
2. Reinforce sliding doors by placing a piece of wood or metal in the track.
3. Attach bars to first floor windows.

These preventative measures encourage the thief to rethink an attempted break-in, but would be more effective when paired with a burglar alarm.
Create an Image of an Occupied Home.

Most break-ins occur between 10 AM and 3 PM while residents are at work or school.  The average burglar targets a home that is unoccupied and easily accessible.  Prevent a robbery to your house by creating the appearance that someone is still home.  To discourage burglars from breaking and entering while you are away:

1. Set lights and electronics to turn on with a timer.
2. Park a second car in the driveway.
3. Maintain your lawn and trim bushes away from windows and walkways.
Trick a burglar into thinking someone is still home with both audio and visual clues.  In addition to lights, TVs and stereos can be programmed to turn on with a timer.  Several security systems include home automation, accessible via smart phone or personal computer.

Hire a Professional Alarm Monitoring Company.

A home without a security system is three times more likely to be broken into than a home with alarm monitoring.  Protect the people and possessions you care about by investing in a home security system.  Whether you want a simple burglar alarm, or require home automation with cameras and a fire alarm, there is a system to fit every budget and need.  Before you purchase a security system:

1.Decide how you want your security system to perform; Will the alarm only detect a break-in, or does the system also monitor your home for environmental emergencies like fire, flood or carbon monoxide?
2.Determine whether your house can accommodate a hardwired or wireless alarm system.
3. Research the reliability of the company’s alarm monitoring response team.

Burglar alarms decrease the amount of time an intruder has in your home, saving you thousands of dollars in losses.  Even after purchasing an alarm monitoring system, you should continue to practice regular preventive measures for maximum home security.
There are several do-it-yourself security techniques to improve the safety of your home.  You can prevent a burglary simply by locking first floor doors and windows.  If you desire additional protection, consider hiring a local security company to install and monitor burglar alarms.
