Geek Squad: Worse than Comcast

My mom bought a computer recently that came with some preinstalled software from Geek Squad. I wasn't worried about it at the time, since I had no intention of paying for a piece of software that I didn't need. Then came the renewal emails...

The emails don't have an unsubscribe link at the bottom. They're not just missing the one-click unsubscribe link; there's no "manage subscription" link, and when you log into your account, there literally are no email preferences. This in itself is in violation of the CAN-SPAM ACT of 2003 and is a source of frustration. But that's OK, I'll just log into my account and change my email preferences, right? Fat chance, there are no email options whatsoever in my account.

Contact chat support and they just direct you to the phone support line. Right off the bat, I found it absurd that I had to make a phone call to get off an EMAIL list. But even worse, I called 4 times and was hung up on every time. I essentially had to harass a chat representative into giving me another number to try.

Turns out it was the main Best Buy support number. At least I got to talk to a person. However, this person didn't want to remove me from their list; instead, she put me on hold for a really long time, then transferred me to the Spanish support line as punishment.

So I'm an hour into the "get unsubscribed from email" odyssey, trying to communicate in a language I don't speak that I just don't want to get the bloody Geek Squad emails. I couldn't decide whether to laugh or cry.

Then came Ernesto. Ernesto is my new best friend. He apologized, took down my email, and added it to their block list, all in the span of a couple of minutes. Wherever you are, Ernesto, I am forever in your debt. For the rest of Geek Squad, if it's this hard to get off their email list, I can't even imagine trying to actually cancel a plan. I don't expect a class action suit to be too long in coming, if there isn't one already. Have they learned nothing from Comcast?

In honor of Bastille Day, FullStory just released the first of many magical features. Have you ever clicked a button repeatedly out of sheer frustration? Well now you can see when your users did that, too. Any maybe, you know, fix it :)

Nice breakdown of population shift in Europe over the past decade or so. Some fairly predictable outcomes, and also some surprises (what's up, Ireland?).

I am like a kid in a candy shop at the National Cryptologic Museum. I have to admit, manipulating an Enigma machine is way more fun than writing a program to encrypt stuff:)

My kids love watching Alone in the Wilderness. Something about Dick Proenneke's calm, steady demeanor is really captivating. I highly recommend it.

If you do not enjoy reading accounts of a mathematician's process of attacking a long-standing unproven theorem, you will not enjoy this article.

My college years at Swarthmore were pretty awesome, in part because I had +Evan Gregory of the Gregory Brothers (Double Rainbow, Autotune the News, the Bed Intruder Song, etc. etc.) as my RA junior year.

When I starting watching the premiere of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (hilarious show produced by Tina Fey), it was hard to miss that the Gregory Brothers had written the theme song. So, um, thanks for another earworm... :P
