PLEASE SHARE: This is essential reading on the evolution of #California's #criminaljusticesystem, written by our amazing Policy Director, Kate Chatfield.
---
Last month, Gov. #JerryBrown made a plea to the people of CA to enact rational laws that consider the justice system as a whole. He called on legislators & voters to push through fear-inducing headlines & continue the unprecedented progress we have made together, progress that inspires reform & provides hope across the nation.

Californians are up for a battle, but this is nothing new. The people of this state have made a positive mark on the justice system despite decades of hysteria. We need to combat the attempted return of the "tough on crime" era, shed light on the facts, & stand by the peoples' will to achieve #publicsafety through #rehabilitation & #restorativejustice versus strictly punishment.

Today, we celebrate the life & legacy of #MLK with the countless who have been inspired & impacted by his leadership!

The need for racial equality & justice is obvious โ€” particularly in our criminal justice system, where over 60% of people in prison are people of color, where 1 in 3 black males born today can expect to go to prison in their lifetime, & where black & brown children across the country are tried as adults at an extraordinarily high rate compared to their light-skinned counterparts.

In honoring Dr. King, letโ€™s continue the conversation around justice & keep the momentum for change going ๐Ÿ—ฃ ๐Ÿ™๐ŸพโœŠ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ #MLKDay #racialequality #socialjustice

Re:store Justice works in deep partnership with the men of San Quentin State Prison on a media project called FirstWatch. Through personal narratives told from the perspective of those inside, the project highlights the transformative work that can take place inside prison walls. In an effort to humanize incarceration, the series explores how accountability and rehabilitation open the potential for healing and restoration. It is the first project of its kind; shot, directed, cut, and scored entirely by the men inside.

Tune into the series on our website at www.restorecal.org!
