This time-lapse clip shows just some of the problems that can crop up with shooting time-lapse.  The main problem here is the tussock bird which keeps hopping about in frame.   This was the Falkland Islands where birds have no fear, so the more you shout the closer they come. Most places, you can just raise a threatening eyebrow and they’d fly away but not there where everything is super-tame.  I’m going to have to photoshop out the bird in every frame where  it appears. Very time consuming.  I normally shoot time-lapse with a long exposure for a couple of reasons; it smoothes out the action and any birds flying through frame or even people walking through disappear if the exposure time is long enough.

The other distraction in the shot is the wind blown grass,  Again, this is the Falkland Islands where not only is the wildlife tame but it’s always windy so repeating the shot on a calm day would be impractical.  So you either live with the shake or take a pair of scissors to every grass stem in frame.  Some people like shake, others don’t and the same goes for broadcasters.  Personally I don’t like it much, but I was shooting this for a historical sequence on the whaling industry a hundred years ago and it seemed acceptable, even appropriate to go with the grass shake.  I used a 2 second exposure and HDR to try to smooth it a little but in the end I think it will help to add to the madness and sadness of the final scene.

I’ve landed a Director of Photography role for a feature film about the wildlife, people and landscape of Colombia. During 2013 we are planning an expedition into the darkest unexplored regions of the Colombian Amazon in search of new species and trying some totally new filming techniques with totally new cameras.

I've created this album to keep you updated on my latest filming adventures in Colombia.

Great work +Richard Kirby and welcome.
Your site http://www.timeframehd.com
is awesome. I love the fact that you can place your curser on a vignette on your site while browsing the images and see the moving image, that's a really cool touch.
So much quality work here.

We would like to share with you a little of the history of Timeframehd: how it all began and how we came to be time-lapse professionals. Our story began back in the 80's when hair was big and cameras contained film...

I know I said this was going to be a year of Colombia, but there’s one more story from Wildest Islands.
While filming the Lucky Butterfly I uncovered a new story about it which made me think that perhaps, the Lucky Butterfly really did deserve it’s name after all.
