Britain: A rip-off to the very end. The UK has just raised the cost of renouncing British citizenship from 321 to 372 pounds. That's a 16% rise. i.e. far greater than the rate of inflation. +Judith Hembrow and I will have to find an extra 100 pounds in a few day's time to pay for this rise in the rates. Luckily, I paid for our children to renounce their UK citizenship last year so their renunciation cost just the 321 pounds each. The total will have been nearly 1400 pounds just for renunciation, on top of all the other costs that we've had to pay.

Why has the Home Office increased these charges ? Just because they can and I suppose as part of the "hostile environment" which they're creating for anyone who isn't quite British enough. They were forced to reveal last year that their costs were far lower than their charges, sometimes by a factor of three or more, and they they're running everything to make a profit out of misery. Remember that this is a government agency which is supposed to help people and that there is no competition, no alternative organisation that anyone can turn to if their costs are too high.

The only bright side of this is that a mere 100 pounds is less than 1% of the total cost of brexit to us so far, so nearly a rounding error given the damage that this has done to us. Having paid this we will at last be free of Britain.

The British government is doing an absolutely excellent job of alienating everyone who has to deal with the country, even ex citizens in other countries who just might have been quite helpful to have on-side when looking for trade deals after brexit.

On January 16 2017, Professor A.C. Grayling was invited by 'Bristol for Europe' to speak at Colston Hall, Bristol. This is his address in full with an on-screen transcript. Thanks to Stephen Perry for hosting the evening and 'Bristol for Europe' for organising such a well attended and encouraging night.
