Meriam Ibrahim is safe for now. She is holed up in the American embassy in Khartoum waiting for her chance to leave Sudan. On Monday a court overturned her death penalty for apostasy, but a day later she was prevented from flying out of the country, detained for 48 hours and accused of trying to [...]

Should we be spending money on this sort of thing? There's a case to be made, but not apparently by DfID, which declines to answer the question

Did she even marry for love? How much do we know about Farzana Parveen one week after she was bludgeoned to death in Pakistan?
When Farzana Parveen was bludgeoned to death in a Lahore street last week at the hands of her relatives, the very public murder guaranteed a light would be shone on Pakistan’s shameful practice of honour killings. Yet almost a week later, we know almost nothing about the woman herself. Piece by piece the original story [...]

My taxi stopped momentarily on one of Khartoum’s main roads, close to the airport. We were stuck behind a cattle truck. But crammed into its open cargo space were not cows on their way to market but a herd of very frightened women. The driver hopped down on to the pavement, grabbed a startled female [...]

Afghanistan: Why I'm not as optimistic as I was three months ago....
First things first: Afghanistan is not Iraq. That doesn't stop the analysts keen to monger doom. They point out that Nato combat troops head home this year leaving behind a fragile government and Islamist groups waiting in the wings. All rather familiar, they say. Last month, 800 Taliban fighters made a push to regain their [...]

Easy to dismiss this, saying Facebook doesn't have much penetration in the country. But if the young, urban population with computer access is heating things up then that is a very worrying indicator of what is happening elsewhere

No such thing as Good Taliban, Bad Taliban. This won't stop until all havens in tribal areas are cleared
Security at Karachi’s airport was never foolproof. Driving up to its departure terminal cars are stopped by armed guards, allowing an officer to walk alongside with something similar to one of those novelty golf ball detectors, the ones marketed as “bomb detectors” by a British fraudster now serving jail time. But that’s not the issue. [...]

All murders are brutal, involving as they do the merciless extinguishing of life. But the shocking manner of Farzana Parveen’s death, her head battered and bloodied, outside the imposing entrance to Lahore’s court complex, was particularly savage. Inevitably, with such a murder of a pregnant woman in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the death has [...]
