Employment
  • Freelance journalist, 2006 - present
In his spare time, Neil created the idiosyncratic cult-movie blog The Day Hollywood Stood Still. Employing an eccentric group of guest contributors and working with entertainment PR agencies, the site is currently approaching 400,000 hits. Neil also, somehow, finds time to write for film magazine and website New Empress, gender politics site The Good Men Project and work on his own short stories and novels. He’s very active on social media sites, where he’s assembled an extensive network and regularly helps people out with guest blogging, appears on podcasts and acts as a beta reader for self-published authors. Paid freelance work has also included: Casual relief as Chief Reporter for the Swanley Messenger; Contributing to the Canterbury Gazette, Dartford Messenger, Gravesend Messenger and the KM Extra advertising supplement; Wrote all copy for two issues of the Property housing supplement. Independently researching, writing and designing all 2007 promotional material and policy documents for Aycliffe County Primary School.
  • Holiday extras Ltd
    Copywriter, 2011 - present
I currently work full-time writing product content and ad copy for the fantastic Holiday Extras, a unique, progressive company specialising in airport services like parking, hotels and travel insurance. HX has given Neil experience in web and print copywriting, content management, SEO, social media, video presenting and scriptwriting, advertising photography, company blogging, web design, training and staff management.
  • Pharma Marketletter Magazine
    Company and Product Editor, 2008 - 2009
My role involved sourcing and writing around a quarter of all material for a weekly pharmaceutical publication, a monthly nutrition magazine and a quarterly supplement, along with writing, formatting and uploading updates to their respective websites. I was also responsible for proofing and redrafting all copy. The role included conducting interviews with industry professionals, liaising with PR officers and attending international press conferences where I was expected, not only to report on the event, but also act as an ambassador, and occasionally salesman, for the company.

Introduction

Neil Sheppard is a professional writer and master of the ancient art of word ninjitsu. He’s a copywriter, a blogger, a journalist and a critic. After earning his philosophy degree, he trained at the London School of Journalism before becoming a freelance journalist. He eventually settled into a role as a section editor for a B2B pharmaceutical magazine, before moving into copywriting. Throughout, he has been a professional geek with a passion for scifi and terrible movies, blogging reviews and self-publishing genre fiction.

The day job

He currently works full-time writing product content and ad copy for the fantastic Holiday Extras, a unique, progressive company specialising in airport services like parking, hotels and travel insurance. HX has given Neil experience in web and print copywriting, content management, SEO, social media, video presenting and scriptwriting, advertising photography, company blogging, web design, training and staff management.

The fun stuff

In his spare time, Neil created the idiosyncratic cult-movie blog The Day Hollywood Stood Still. Employing an eccentric group of guest contributors and working with entertainment PR agencies, the site is currently approaching 400,000 hits. Neil also, somehow, finds time to write for film magazine and website New Empress, gender politics site The Good Men Project and work on his own short stories and novels. He’s very active on social media sites, where he’s assembled an extensive network and regularly helps people out with guest blogging, appears on podcasts and acts as a beta reader for self-published authors.

The personal stuff

Neil currently lives in Folkestone with his wife and baby son, and spends most of his time trying to find extra, hidden hours of the day in which to fit his writing around his day job and spending time with his family.
