In Defence of Finwë
There is often Instinctive (and not unreasonable) reaction to Finwë. His actions concerning Fëanor are misguided at best and disastrously irresponsible at worst. He is not 'a good dad' ... in respect of not giving Fëanor the discipline he requires. With these assertions, I basically agree.

However, I feel something must be said in his defence. Let us not forget that Finwë lost Míriel, nor gloss over the impact which her death had upon him. THe fault of Míriel in this matter is readily apparent as it is openly discussed in _The Silmarillion _, as are the lasting repercussions which result from her choice (directly or otherwise).

But whilst I do find Finwë's choices in the raising ... and particularly in the disciplining ... of Fëanor, I cannot help but maintain a drop (and perhaps more than a drop) of sympathy for a guy who lost his love, and whose only remaining link to her is this lone (albeit unruly) child. It is perhaps not so surprising that Finwë might have been reluctant to discipline his son, when every time he looked upon his face he saw the face of his dead wife.

Of course, I am not speaking from experience! I am fortunate enough to never have experienced such loss. But I'm pretty sure that my 8 year old daughter, who already has me wrapped around her little finger, would get away with so much more if her mother had been tragically lost (Eru forbid!)
