"And Google is no longer willing to sit back and watch helplessly as others manipulate and distort its broader vision."
This timing couldn't be more perfect: Samsung buying its own AI assistant software¹ is exactly why Google is making Pixel phones.

From my analysis yesterday²:

Having its own vehicle is critical to Google for one simple reason: Even if other phone manufacturers commit to using Android, they frequently take Google's OS-adjacent services out of the spotlight and prioritize their own competing services instead. ...

With the way Google's projects and priorities are evolving, Android by itself is no longer guaranteed to address all of the company's future-looking goals. And Google is no longer willing to sit back and watch helplessly as others manipulate and distort its broader vision.

Beautifully illustrated.

Free audiobook by John Scalzi, narrated by Zachary Quinto. SAY NO MORE. Downloading now.
Today's the day: The Dispatcher is out! It's an audio novella narrated by Zachary Quinto (Spock in the new Star Trek movies), and it's available for free through November 2nd on Audible. I'm really very happy with this work, and with Quinto's narration of it. I think you will be too.

FYI, for those of you who haven't signed up yet, Pam's Picks goes out tomorrow! I'm sure you're looking for a great summer read, right? It's only once a month, and it includes my favorite reads of that month. (spoiler - this one includes a Best of the Year pick!)

"iOS 10 looks and feels like an Apple admission that Google’s vision of the future of smartphones has been right all along."
Man this is so true. And Apple users will think all these features are brand new. But overall, it's just more evidence that iOS and Android are more similar than ever. (Except the one thing that will never change - no home screen on iOS, just the wall of apps.)

Anyone looking for a great summer read? ARCADIA is simply a masterpiece. It's really hard to describe because it's multi-layered and crosses genres, and the more I say, the more I spoil. Trust me, if you like intelligent, masterfully written books, this will be the best one you've read in a long time. You'll immediately want to discuss it with someone. WOW, I mean seriously, WOW!
