Over half of the world’s population live in urban areas and increasingly, cities are the focus of efforts to meet human development goals and sustain economic growth. Yet the pursuit of more prosperous, inclusive and sustainable urban development is complicated by climate change, which multiplies existing environmental risks, undermines the effectiveness of existing infrastructure, and creates new resource constraints.

This paper, from the Coalition for Urban Transitions, reviews the synergies between urban economic development and climate action in cities: http://ledsgp.org/resource/economic-social-benefits-low-carbon-cities/?loclang=en_gb

LEDS GP is strengthening its initiative to identify and make the case for development investments that are good for the global climate – and guarantee benefits for local people in the short and long term.

Every month, the team will be sharing best practice tools, frameworks, and case studies via the LEDS GP newsletter. The initiative begins with this month’s round-up on ‘Climate and people first – low emission action for sustainable development’. The initiative is a joint project of the LEDS GP Global Secretariat, Regional Platforms and partners at UNEP DTU Partnership and the NewClimate Institute.
