The week of October 19 is the week digital music met its future. Long dominated by early entrants and standalone companies, the music subscription market was rocked by the world's two largest technology companies, Apple and Google.

It's heartening to hear of indie artists hitting it big on their own terms! Still, I'd take issue with the idea that a pro-sounding record can be made on just a laptop ...

The combined might of the independent labels is the biggest player in the US recorded music market – and growing fast.

According to new stats from Nielsen/Billboard, the independents took 35.4% of the US market by ownership (volume) in the first half of 2015.
That was comfortably ahead of Universal (27.6%), Sony (20.9%) and Warner (15.2%), and represented an increase on the 35.1% share the indies claimed across the whole of 2014.

Indie label trade body A2IM has trumpeted the numbers online, calling market share by ownership ‘the only appropriate market share definition’.

This is the metric that re-apportions market share taken by albums which are owned by independent labels but distributed by majors – the most obvious example being Taylor Swift, whose catalogue is owned by Big Machine but distributed by UMG.

Hmm, yes ... what's happening to music these days?
The Who…Blur…Metallica… If the 72 point font bands on the line-ups for this summer's biggest UK festivals weren't what had you hammering refresh for tickets, that's probably because they're are still relying on long in the tooth veteran bands rather than newcomers.

I wonder how many people have access to a cassette player these days?

Streaming is bigger than ever. So why are artists doing so badly?

Artist's income would be way off to the left of this chart, barring a few superstar exceptions ...

Excellent points on this upcoming game-changer ...
Tracy Maddux is the CEO of CD Baby, a digital distributor that works closely with (truly) independent musicians to get their work on platforms like iTunes and Spotify… and soon, Apple Music. Here, the exec explains optimism around the new platform, despite the many criticisms being lobbed at the tech giant’s new streaming play.
