Children's librarian +Elizabeth Bird is pretty much my kidlit/library hero; the girl knows her stuff. She painstakingly put together two Top 100 Lists that are chock-full of information and background on the top 100 picture books and novels that she compiled through a poll she conducted on her blog. These are fantastic resources and I encourage you to get your own copy. You can find hardcopies in the library; just ask me if you'd like to see them.

I'm starting a new weekly post on the library blog! Although this meme has been around for quite some time, it's a new feature on our library website. I'll be sharing the books I read each week. Feel free to comment on each post and share what you're been reading too.

I forgot to post that I (briefly) blogged about +Jonathan Auxier's visit to Robinson last week. How did he do? FANTASTIC! (You'll get it if you ever invite Jonathan to your school, which you should do.) We were his last Southern California school visit and I'm so glad I was able to book him before he moved to the East Coast. Thanks for coming to our school, Jonathan!

I'm so excited to announce that author +Jonathan Auxier will be visiting our school on Friday, October 28! Jonathan is the author of PETER NIMBLE AND HIS FANTASTIC EYES, one of my favorite books of the summer. He will be making a presentation to fourth and fifth graders. The fourth graders are already becoming familiar with Peter Nimble since I've been reading aloud from the book for the last month. They are loving the book!

You can purchase his book at:
{pages: a bookstore} (904 Manhattan Avenue, Manhattan Beach)
Mysterious Galaxy Redondo Beach (810 Artesia Boulevard, Redondo Beach)
Barnes & Noble

Jonathan will also be signing books at Mysterious Galaxy on October 28 at 3pm.

Please head over to the library blog for more information.

Economic "lessons" in children's literature

BOYS AND READING: There's always lots of discussion about boys and their reading habits (or lack thereof, in some cases). Just a few things I've come across recently:

Books for Boys webcast by School Library Journal, moderated by Jon Scieszka (September 15, 2011– 3:00 PM EDT – 75 minutes):

Boys and Reading: Is There Any Hope? NYT article by Robert Lipsyte (August 19, 2011):

The Why Chromosome: Why Boys Do Love Books event (October 30, 2011, 1:00~4:00pm @ Mrs. Nelson's Toy & Book Shop:

As parents and educators sometimes we need a little reminder that kids can be pretty darn amazing.
