Shades of Slopedom... New Zealand
I'll admit it. I'm a sucker for lines and shapes and the way light falls across them in certain conditions to create designs all their own, like some artistic overlay.

It's like the one time you can actually see the gesture of light, caressing the very thing it touches. I love gentle caresses of light. sigh.

The Rapture, Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii

BEST VIEWED LARGE

There is nothing like being able to walk up a Lava tube and see it rapture over and over again. The red hot lava comes following out creating some amazing, textures patterns and colors. The heat generated by some of the surface flow is so great that your hands and face start to burn if you get too close....but who cares when you have a camera and tripod in the hand. ;))

How was this image created?
This is a composite image created by 3 different photograph using layers and Masks in Photoshop. I used parts from different images to replace our of focus areas in the image so that the entire image would look sharp. I used a long lens to take this shot and had to take the shot quickly and move away due to the intense heat generated by The Rapture.

Silver Lining, Kauai, Hawaii
#landscapephotography , #photographyworkflow   #photographytips

We left Twinsburg on Christmas day to avoid getting stranded in the snowstorm in Northeast just to find out that we missed our flight due to a time change. But the employee at Alaska Airlines we able to perform a small miracle and get us on an earlier flight to Hawaii....before we were grounded. ;)) Yeah!!!....So, we are off to get some sun and fun and to have a Photowalk with the great +Wes Lum in Oahu tomorrow. Hope some of you can join us.

How was this image created?
I could have used an GND filter to capture this photograph...but I was worried that the fantastic light would disappear while I was rummaging around in my backpack...so I decided to bracket the shots instead. I later combined the shots using our iHDR workflow to produce the final results. I wanted to capture the silver lining of the river flowing through the canyon.

Would the photo loose some or all of its appeal without a strong foreground element? - BEST VIEWED LARGE

Here is an image form the Glen Canyon Recreational Area just outside Paige Arizona. This was taken during one of our workshop. In every workshop we take the students to one location where composition is real challenge. The idea is to come up with something interesting from that location. The first time students dont like it but when they see what others came up with they could hardly believe all the opportunities that they missed.

How was this image created?
This image demonstrates the Gestalt Figure vs. Ground principle in action. The question you have to ask is why does THE PORTAL stand out from rest of the image? The location, shape and colors make the THE PORTAL stand out. If you want to make your subject stand out use the characteristics of subject to isolate it from the background.

You can learn about Gestalt and Compostion in our Ebooks at: http://www.jaypatelphotography.com/how-to

During my recent winter tour to the Black Forest with Lars Kehrel and Fabian Müller we didn't miss the opportunity to visit the famous wind beech trees a the Schauinsland mountain. This is one of the few location which look great in reality but even better when you start photographing at it.

This is because with a photo of these tree you can really bring out their isolation and resilience which they  need through the cold winter days. Here I opted for a radical approach: While sometimes the trees are isolated by a snow storm or heavy fog when we visited we could see the whole group of trees. By using a the right viewing angle and some heavy post-processing I did isolate my favorite tree of the group. I really like the level of abstraction you can achieve that way.

Rialto ,Beach, Olympic National Park, WA
#PhotographyWorkflow, #howtophotograph

Here is an image fom Rialto Beach in Washington. The beach is covered with small pebbles which creates a great foreground. There is also small picnic area and the access to the beach is pretty straight forward.

How was this Photography created?
I used a simple 2 stop GND filter to take this photo. With this filter the pastels in the sky were well balanced against the dark foreground pebbles. To get the foreground textures, I waited until the wave had retreated and then setup my shot to fill the frame with as much foreground as possible.

Hey Dude!!, Big Island, Hawaii

BEST VIEWED LARGE

In all my travels I have seen lots of wildlife in and out of the water, but this was the first time we had seen a Honu (A Green Sea Turtle) make come out of the water on to the land. On our last trip to Hawaii, three Honu's came ashore to greet us just before we caught a flight to mainland.

How was this photograph created?
Because of all the black sand in the are, the exposure was very tricky. I had to use histogram on the back of the camera to get the proper exposure. Because the turtle was still wet, I used a polarizer to cut through the glare and see the details. The low position of the tripod and camera help blur out the foreground and background to make Honu stand out.

Once were Giants, Yoho National Park, Canada
#photographyworkflow , #howtophotograph

Forest fires dramatically alter the landscape and often leaves it unattractive to look at but often times they are necessary to bring about new life. On our last trip to Canada we got to try out our creative skills in a forest recently destroyed by a forest fire.

How was this photograph created?
This photograph was an exercise in learning to see...it was a challenge to create something interesting from stand of dead unattractive trees. This photograph was taken with a wide angle lens with camera pointing straight up in middle of the afternoon (I think around 3:00 PM). I waited until the sun was covered up by the clouds and the clouds within the frame formed an interesting patterns. The distribution of the trees was selected to form a symmetrical pattern (as much as possible).

Feel free to share examples of creative photograph.
