We followed up on our earlier report about Chicago's red "X" program and found more news: It looks like the city couldn't find more money for the controversial program, and is quietly phasing it out.
The city placed bright red 'X' signs to warn firefighters which vacant buildings could collapse during a fire. Now, first responders will rely more and more on electronic notifications.

Wonder why #Chicago other #Illinois cities use the word "alderman" for official titles, as opposed to more inclusive alternatives? Here's an explainer and a story about what happened when this was taken up at the state level. Thanks to my +WBEZ colleagues, as well as +Jennifer Brandel and +Tanveer Ali for research!
Local governments across the country are dumping ‘alderman’ for gender-inclusive alternatives. Here's why this particular job title remains a holdout in Chicago and other Illinois cities.

Love #pinball ? Love #Chicago ? Well, it turns out the two have been intertwined for decades. Learn (and soak in) all that's Chicago in the pinball industry: manufacturing, art and the people.
 Thanks to +WBEZ 's very own +Mickey Capper

A fair question, I think, since we complain about the cold quite a bit!

I literally had no clue that the Chicago area was home to POW camps during WW II! So glad to have learned more from +Edie Rubinowitz and +Logan Jaffe, who created a map of where the camps were and dug up interesting tales about the prisoners and camp life. Definitely worth the short read and engaging listens. http://goo.gl/MUNkv7  This photo of a prisoner burial at Fort Sheridan was provided to +WBEZ by the Highland Park Historical Society.

Never got a #tattoo   in my life, but maybe I'm regretting it? Or, at least I didn't know about a fascinating episode in #Chicago tattoo history. Learn about a time when there was just ONE legal parlor in the city, and how an innovative artist weathered the storm. +WBEZ +Logan Jaffe Full story and archival photos, too: http://wbez.is/1mvXLQs

Think Chicago's tattoo scene's has been static (and crowded) for decades? Thing again. There was a short time in the early 70s when the entire city had just ONE shop, led by tattoo artist icon Cliff Raven. Learn more from +WBEZ 's +Logan Jaffe :

Learn why a peculiar water pump in a Chicago forest preserve draws the thirsty, the faithful and the curious. Thanks to my +WBEZ colleagues +Chris Bentley and +Logan Jaffe for the shots!

Just what the heck happened to Chicago's O'Hare Airport? After all, there are Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 5. A quick-hit, but interesting answer from +WBEZ 's +Yolanda Perdomo

The area’s premier airport sports Terminals 1, 2, 3 and ... 5. What gives? ;

Love that +WBEZ 's Curious City looked at why the biggest, most familiar retailers sometimes choose to occupy old-ish buildings in Chicago instead of building their familiar suburban-style stores. What do they consider? http://goo.gl/jzfbAW  (Image: flickr/Chris Smith)

Here's a bar debate that turned into a fascinating +WBEZ  story about the relative value of Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. Best comment yet:  "The lake gets my vote: in the rock-paper-scissors of human survival, well trumps sewer."
