Board Member Spotlight:Dr. Ahsan Arozullah on Darul Qasim as his Spiritual & Intellectual Home

"Hafiz Amin was very beloved, partly because we thought his English accent was cool – but what we began to realize very quickly, after studying with him, was he was one of the first people in our life, who actually could explain to us Islam in a way, in a structure, that made sense to us, as people who grew up here in the West.."

Learn about our new ONLINE class, "I'm a Muslim"

Today, young Muslims are leaving Islam on a regular basis. In this day and age, Muslim high school students, college students and young professionals are faced with societal and academic pressures undermining the true understanding of Islam. We believe the reason for the unfortunate departure is an intellectual issue.

What is the Islamic Studies Essentials Online Program?
The four-semester program will lead you through a logical progression and approaches relevant contemporary questions with the necessary methodological foundation. Creating a forum that equips you to further your Islamic development and academic understanding is prudent, especially if you are in high school, enrolled in college or beginning your career as a young professional.

"You Give Sovereignty To Whom You Will": Placing Perspective on Recent Political Events
"A Muslim contributes to society and civilization, as summed up by the Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ: "The upper hand is better than the lower hand" the giving hand is better than the receiving hand. If our panic is because we fear we will not be given anymore, then that is a fear which is based on a very selfish approach to life and that is not the earmark of this Ummah, the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ. This Ummah has always been a giving Ummah. What can we give to society and civilization, that should be the question in our mind."

On these last few days and nights of Ramadan, emulate the ‪#‎Sunnah‬:
Ibn 'Abbas said: "The Prophet ‪#‎Muhammad‬ was the most generous of people, but he would be his most generous during ‪#‎Ramadan‬. . ."
Sahih al Bukhari, Volume 1, Hadith

Alhamdullilah, we've reached 33% of our goal thanks to you! We still need your help to reach our goal this month! You can donate to 4 areas:

Operations - providing Islamic academic programs at a fraction of the cost of an American higher education institute with the same academic and professional quality

Scholarship - for aspiring and dedicated students at all levels, from high school to doctoral level

Zakat - an Islamic obligation on every able Muslim that will be used within the Islamic rubric of how zakat can be used

Facility - expenses and maintenance associated with running the $1.75M 30,000 sq foot facility

Consider becoming a monthly donor, you can give as much as 25, 50, 75 dollars a month. Or donate a sum for the entire year! End your Ramadan strong and donate generously.

Darul Qasim is not limited to an institution for young students. We also facilitate learning and growth for the learned. Here is a typical day in the life of a faculty member.

"In the morning when I come to Darul Qasim I study Qurʾānic Recitation with Mawlana Arif, who is an expert in that discipline. Then I either prepare for my classes or correct assignments. Then I teach Sharḥ al-ʿAqāʾid in theology. After that I attend Mawlana Bilal’s class on Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ. Then I teach Imam Birgivi’s advanced Arabic syntax text, Iẓhār al-Asrār. On Thursdays I attend Shaykh Amin’s class on Hujjat Allah al-Bālighah of Shah Wali Ullah, and on Sundays I attend his lectures on hadith and tafsīr. Darul Qasim is special in that it allows not only the students but also the teachers to increase their knowledge." Dr. Muhammed Stodolsky, Chair, Islamic Law

Please donate these last few blessed days of Ramadan. Your contributions are serving you and generations to come.

Sunday ‪#‎Tafsir‬ continues tomorrow with the beginning of Surah Al-Ahzab.

"When you obey in the form of Sajdah, you have encapsulated guidance for you. Then, your seed will grow and you’ll see the result of your guidance in front of you. But if you don’t capture the guidance and encapsulate it, and you reject or deny it or are in a state of skepticism, then you won’t go through any motions except whatever pleases you or pleases other people around you. It will be a very loose acquiescence to what Islam says you must do. That is not enough, and that is not yaqeen. Yaqeen (certainty) means I know when I pray on time I’m ok. I know I don’t lie, I’m ok. I know when I don’t cheat I’m ok. I know if I lose some money and I’m honest I’m ok, etc. That's your conviction that guidance has to be applied even though it may not be understood all the time.

Today we wait for understanding before we apply anything, it doesn’t work this way. If you did that with anything in life, you won’t have a life. I’m sure you don’t know how your car works, and I’m sure you don’t know how your phone works - a smart phone, it's supposed to be smarter than you. If you were there starting to understand how the smart phone works, you wouldn’t use it. Likewise, the Qur’an is the smartest thing that we have in our hands. There's nothing more intelligent than the Qur’an, the Revelation that Muhammad ﷺ brought. Before we say, you must understand everything before you apply it, we must think of how that works in the dunya. In the mundane world it doesn’t work that way. First we apply, we function on the base of application. We don’t function on the basis of knowing. That is just the human way, human societies are built that way.

Is there a need to understand? Yes there is. Is there a need for knowing? Yes there is, but that’s a process. It’s a lifelong process, it doesn’t happen overnight as these ayahs inform us. We should know, but at the same time, we don’t forego the application of Islam because we don’t understand. Thats why obedience is primary, then understanding the reasons behind obedience is secondary. That is why the Devil is the Devil because he put understanding the rule before obedience."
