Huge win for California today! Thanks to everyone who signed petitions, shared with friends, and reached out to lawmakers in support of #CalECPA . Once again, your voices have made a difference!
Today, in a landmark victory for Californians’ digital privacy rights, Governor Jerry Brown signed the California Electronic Communications Privacy Act (CalECPA, SB 178) into law. The bill, jointly authored by Senators Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) and Joel Anderson (R-Alpine), updates the state's privacy laws for the digital age by protecting Californians against warrantless surveillance of their digital information.

The Hangout On Air will be hosted by Jess Hemerly, Public Policy Manager at Google. She will be joined by guests Rainey Reitman, activism director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and Robyn Greene, policy counsel for the Open Technology Institute.

We’ll lay out the current state of play, including the USA Freedom Act and the potential reauthorization of Section 215 of the PATRIOT Act. We’ll also talk about last week’s big decision from the Second Circuit Court of Appeals on bulk collection.

Ask your question in the comments and through the Q&A app during the live broadcast.

Well...there is supposed to be government powers holding it in check...if
they fail the absolute final say is the commanders of the armed
forces....but that isn't the problem either...the problem is that we are
all accountable for these results when we all push aside what needs to be
done and nobody does it. This is the result of less work and more
play...when the rest of earth cannot play because they cannot control all
people with old ways they currently try to do. Technology is allowing
freedom to spread across the planet like a fire...into forbidden places
that dislike this form of change...or have no idea how to direct it in a
positive manner...like not lying to us when we need to know....we....as in
all people.... are responsible for our own perceived failures and sucesses.

Decided to revive an old blog so I can ramble on about running, eating, cooking, and drinking during my time in Europe. Do not expect anything profound.

Bday present from +Jonathan Koshi is this rad teak end table with a built in magazine rack. I've wanted one of these things for a while, and Koshi had wanted my magazines off the coffee table for a while. Win win!

I need your help! For the last 3 years, +Jonathan Koshi and I have worked with kids at our local elementary school through +826 Valencia. We've seen kids make incredible progress as writers and thinkers because of the attention and encouragement they receive from the program. 826 is in the running for a $500,000 grant via the Bay Area Impact Challenge for their new Tenderloin writing center and we need more votes to make it happen. No registration or login required. Please take a second to vote and share this post to help! Do it for the children! #ivote826
#IVoted to help kids find their voices. Vote for 826 Valencia in the #GoogleImpactChallenge Bay Area g.co/bayareachallenge

Stand up for the safety of your digital life! Sign this petition to tell President Obama to support encryption: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov//petition/publicly-affirm-your-support-strong-encryption
Last week, the media reported that the White House has been examining proposals that weaken encryption and give the government a 'backdoor' to access your data. The President's support would go a long way in preventing policies that would make the Internet less safe.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Rock's Backpages – the world's leading collection of vintage music journalism – we bring you a classic interview-cum-confrontation between the late Lester Bangs and his hero Lou Reed. Originally titled Lou Reed: A Deaf Mute in a Telephone Booth, the piece first appeared in Let It Rock in November 1973
