These are great , Andrea -- I never knew there were so many spectacular palaces in one region of France. I'm headed to Paris this summer and I'm going to have to think about a side trip to the Loire.

Good post.  I stopped using hostels a long time ago, but I agree about the long bus rides: by the time you get off, you can't even remember why you wanted to come. Except, that is, in Latin America, where the tourist buses are so comfortable that you almost look forward to the trip. Going across the border still sucks, though, especially if it's the U.S border.
