When you have a moment, take a look at the writings of John Churcher - he speaks from the standpoint of progressive Christianity with an emphasis on living in today's world rather than the church doctrines and creeds of the past. This link takes you to his Permission to Speak welcome page which outlines his views - his latest piece of writing is listed on the left as 'Distributive Justice' with some very modern, and forward-looking conclusions. http://www.permissiontospeak.org.uk/index.htm - he's written various books and articles too. He's spoken in our church several times in the past and I'm afraid he's had some of our 'traditional Methodists' walk out before because they don't understand his modern way of 'doing religion'! He's also a personal friend who lives in St Albans.

There are interesting correlations with what you're saying above and his viewpoint towards the end of his latest piece, that we should be taking responsibility for ourselves and for the 'here and now'.

Personally I think that we are all responsible for our own actions - we all have the ability to make choices. Some of those choices need a wider vision and we need to include the welfare of others in that wider vision. I don't understand the notion that some hold who believe that 'God made everything, therefore it's not our doing or our responsibility'. The actions take by people to do harm to others are their own actions, no-one else's and they certainly are not decreed by a higher order of any sort.

The important thing to remember about all the different faith groups is that they have the ability to take us out of ourselves - to encourage us to stop thinking about ourselves and our own personal journeys for a time and instead focus on doing something good for somebody else. This is why so many people still look to faith groups in times of needs. They can offer practical help with money and donations; they can join as an ecumenical movement and bring about change on a grand scale; they can offer support in the form of a listening ear, a visit and a chat for the elderly and lonely and as a building, the church is still seen as safe place…somewhere to turn in times of strife and (in most cases) a place where everyone is made to feel welcome. The churches that I know help to bring communities togethers in many ways, not all through religion but through everyday actions and activities too - the challenge for churches is to see the modern world and embrace it, rather than sticking with what they've always known and face extinction.
