The black and white version of this map originally showed up in +Jon Sawatsky's Prepared! column on the +Kobold Press blog. The colour version appears in the Prepared! book.

This map was a lot of fun to make, but I'm also aware that it's not particularly useful for VTTs or for printing out and laying on your table. For encounter maps like this, what do you like to use? Is a top-down battle map your preference?

I just finished a map for EONS, EN Publishing's official magazine for the WOIN RPG system. They've been great to work with, and the map was fun to make.

Here's three reasons to join the Down with D&D G+ community, with podcast hosts +Shawn Merwin and +Christopher Sniezak:
1) There's great discussions about D&D!
2) The hosts hinted there might be a bonus if they reach 100 members by the end of the year (yes, I'm being selfish).
3) It's D&D. Maps are bound to come up!

Hey, thanks for letting me join the conversation here! I was just listening to episode 29. The discussion about the ranger got my brain firing off in several directions, but I'll try to stick to one, the idea of class balance. I think in 5th edition balance is far less about fitting a class or other element into a matrix of mechanics so that all the edges join up smoothly with everything else. I think you rightly pointed out that balancing the ranger is a matter of making the class useful. To dig further down, it's about giving a player who chooses that class plenty of opportunities to take part in the collective fiction of play. I find myself thinking about those opportunities a whole bunch as I'm designing a new adventure for my group… and a whole bunch more as I think about designing for other groups, groups that I can't make any assumptions about. I can't assume a particular play style or any specific character choices. There's a slider between (for example) "a cleric could really shine in this situation" and "this is a piece of the story made for a cleric." Bitcrusher or compressor? It's tough to set the Heroic EQ just right to bring out the sweet, sweet sound of adventure.

The Mengkong River
This is a map I drew for the Map a River challenge at the Cartographers Guild. It's been a really long time since I worked with pen and paper. It was a lot of fun to work without layers or undo.
