SIGGRAPH 2013 Preview - The technical papers and accompanying videos are always a highlight of the SIGGRAPH. This year seems to bring some neat new tricks, as shown in this preview-video. At the end there’s a short clip of a snow-simulation that will blow your mind if you care about these things. My othere favourites are a brilliant new [...] http://ow.ly/2x5klq

Still alive: a Motion Control Reel - Oh boy, motion control took us a long, long way during the ascent of VFX. Robert Lyons was there from the very start and his reel takes you all the way back to the glory days of VFX production. http://ow.ly/2wQSoQ

Massive Destruction in Real-Time - This incredible technology demonstration from nVIDIA is quite relevant to the future of animation tools. A paper called “Real Time Dynamic Fracture with Volumetric Approximate Convex Decompositions” describes the technology behind this real-time destruction simulation. I still remember fiddling with Rayfire and waiting for the simulation to calculate. This will probably go a lot faster [...] http://ow.ly/2vM7f8

Groundbreaking effects for Twilight — Breaking Dawn Part 2 - I was anxiously waiting for the first looks inside the VFX of Twilight. Not that I enjoyed the films (I never watched them), but out of sheer curiosity. More and more VFX breakdowns start to surface now, and the first one is all about the breaking ground in the film’s climactic battle scene. http://ow.ly/2vJ4cI

He’s on fire! VFX breakdown of a Solomon Kane scene - Enjoy this short breakdown of a rather impressive scene from Solomon Kane. It was produced by rapidly expanding french studio BUF. I’m pretty sure we will see more of their work soon, they have their hands in everything. http://ow.ly/2vCwZh

Under the sea: Squid rig - Rigs, rigs and more rigs. I can’t help it, they are just so fascinating. The latest mind-blower is this animation-rig for a squid by Georg Schneider from Germany. With a nice blend between detailed controls and procedural animation it’s an animator’s dream come true. http://ow.ly/2vzs9W

The one reel to rule them all: Weta Workshop - Over the years Weta Workshop has found it’s one level of quality in VFX. It’s not just that they handle immense CGI with ease, it’s that they build and create real props where possible as well. They are among the top of the crop now and their showreel is a sight to behold. http://ow.ly/2vro2C
