So the 17th March saw the most incredible northern lights display we have seen in a really long time, I was following the murmurs on the internet and collected all my gear to head out, most important bit of kit been the coffee pot. The image created here was one I have wanted to create for well over a year, and was waiting for an event of equal or greater intensity to last years display, and boy did it deliver.

The location is at the chimney stacks or also known as Lacada Point, which is a good 30min walk if you walk at a relatively fast pace, so as twilight started to creep in and Sam arrived home I made a beeline for the Causeway, and started walking.

Walking along the path was fun also thanks to the soft grass and mud, oh and did I mention it was now dark enough that you could barely make out the path, with torchlight in hand I forged on.

Arriving at the point it was now dark, setting up the tripods was interesting, trying to level them, but what was more interesting was that to get the image I have, I had to be set up right on the edge, and really in the dark not a super bright idea, during daylight hours its precarious enough. I constantly had to tell myself before moving around the tripod and to it, to awaking my senses as to where I am, in the dark your eye's are slow to assist with letting you know where you are and helping with balance, and really think before I stepped anywhere, as a wrong foot would have gotten me in a spot of bother.

The display was good to start off with then seemed to die down a little, from the top I could see torches flicking about down by the stones, and saw several cars leaving and thought to myself that, that was a mistake, they are going to miss it, I myself thought the same but but knowing how unpredictable the northern lights can be stuck around, and then all hell broke lose, strong spikes and then to top it all we saw curtains  of light flicking over head.

I had no idea where to point the camera, the lens could not have been wide enough for this display, at this point the one camera was just on timelap's mode and I just lay on my back and enjoyed the display.
Around 02:00 I decided it was time to head on home, not really looking forward to the walk, and wishing I had one of those off road Sedgeway's. While walking back I noticed the light intensify again with some strong upward spike's, I contemplated quickly setting up again, but by that time I was knackered and wanting to get home.

In short, I took plenty images, have a few images to make a short timelap's of the moving light and if I have two decent images from the night I'll be happy. The image here is a 12 image stitch of the gorgeous light captured that evening, and to end off I do need to let you all know, what you see here in the image is NOT what you see with the naked eye, the camera's sensor is exposed to the light for anything btw 8-45 sec and gathers far more light than the eye can, so when there are these alert's please don't be under the impression that this is what you get to see, but do grab your camera and tripod make sure the camera can be adjusted as in aperture shutter speed etc and come and try to get your own northern lights images.

This is the result of about 2 weeks scouting to find this view of the hedges, trying to find another angle from these hedges, making sure i had anchor points on either side, and then its really different because its a snow blizzard, a shot unique to a few people #darkhedges #gameofthrones #ireland #kingsroad +Ireland

Here is a very different mood from the same day, but much earlier, before  we even thought there might be a little sunshine, such a different mood is created when there are overcast and dramatic conditions. +Donegal Photowalk 2014 +Ireland +Wild Atlantic Way #drama #dramatic #longexposure #longexposurephotography +Landscape Photography +BTP Landscape Pro +Landscape Photography Community #valiantfotography.com
