I've been reading through the Twitter timeline of instant legend Felicity Aston, who just completed a 1,700 km ski trek across Antarctica this weekend. Alone. She sent out tweets during her journey at @felicity_aston, documenting in real-time the emotional and physical feat that took her 58 days across a rather barren South Pole icescape. Her story is a rollercoaster, with faulty gear acting up, a broken watch, meeting fellow adventurers at the South Pole, falling into meditative states while skiing and listening to music, breaking down at the sight of mountains on the horizon. Her prose is clean, witty, and insightful. This material will obviously end up in some sort of publication soon. Major congratulations to Ms. Aston, who's experience is still unfolding as we sit in front of computers: twitter.com/felicity_aston

Some tweets:

"The bad weather finally caught up with me. Wind, snow, restless skies thick with cloud and flat light."

"Breezy day with trousers held together with sticky tape and velcro. Need to do some sewing this evening..."

"I had visitors last night - real ones not hallucinations! - a convoy of vehicles coming out of Pole came to say HI"

"I can see mountains and they look beautiful. It's like first sight of a finish line. I stopped in my tracks and cried."

"Enjoying a perfect Antarctic evening. Completely still and silent. The sun is so hot I can sit outside and savour the view."

"It's incredible that I can ski all day now with very little going on in my head. It's almost a form of meditation."

"Accidentally peed on my gloves which hang from my wrists on elastic. Not sure what kind of omen it is for the year."

"Disaster. I've reached the bottom of my pot of peanut butter.".

"Drink Coffee? Off With Your Head!" Entertaining and informative piece from the NPR Food Blog about 17th century reactions to coffee indulgence.

"He observed that the people drinking alcohol would just get drunk and sing and be jolly, whereas the people drinking coffee remained sober and plotted against the government." -Stewart Allen: http://n.pr/zUXmGv
By now, many New Year's resolvers are finding out how difficult it is to give up caffeine. History brims over with coffee-lovers who couldn't bring themselves to quit the bean — even when they faced ...

You could probably say the same about food: we do it to get energy, other cultures do it to meet friends and family.

What becomes a ’90s cult-rock legend most? That death is a great career move is a sad cliché, but it’s true nonetheless; witness Kurt Cobain and Jeff Buckley. Second, though—and considerably...

January Aurora Over Norway

What's that in the sky? An aurora. A large coronal mass ejection occurred on our Sun five days ago, throwing a cloud of fast moving electrons, protons, and ions toward the Earth. Although most of this cloud passed above the Earth, some of it impacted our Earth's magnetosphere and resulted in spectacular auroras being seen at high northern latitudes. Pictured above is a particularly photogenic auroral corona captured last night above Grotfjord, Norway. To some, this shimmering green glow of recombining atmospheric oxygen might appear as a large eagle, but feel free to share what it looks like to you. This round of solar activity is not yet over -- a new and even more powerful solar flare occurred yesterday that might provide more amazing aurora as soon as tonight.

Amazing photographs from The Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival 2012. It just doesn't look real.

Wow. It takes +Anderson Cooper 360 about 10 seconds now to list all of the social media sites you can reach him on. "Follow me, Like me, Circle me."

Of course, it's taken me five minutes just to write this on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+. Damn you internet! Just kidding, I love you. I think. No I do. I have to today, right? #blackoutsopa Whoa! Hashtags in Google+? I thought that was Twitter-exclusive. And what's with punctuation marks following Google+? That's going to look weird forever. Google+. Google+! "Google+" Google+: (Google+)

Some of them work. The parenthesis one looks like a spaceship.
