Thank you, Dr. Jones
Today, my 30th birthday, ironically marks the passing of Dr. Howard Jones, the man who gave me the gift of life by creating the first In Vitro Fertilization clinic in the U.S along with his wife, Dr. Georgeanna Jones.  He was 104. IVF was once considered st...

Pet Therapy!
Having been on the Pediatric Oncology service, I've been in need of a pick-me-up in the workplace. What better way than Pet Therapy for residents? My dog is going to be so jealous...

Things I've learned so far in intern year
Cute cartoon, by Fizzy Blog: http://doccartoon.blogspot.com/2011/01/months-of-intern-year.html 1. I'm definitely an outpatient person. It's not that I don't like inpatient medicine.  It's more that every time I start an outpatient rotation, I feel like I ca...

Larry Zaroff: Every inch a King
I first met Larry Zaroff as a lecturer in the Human Biology Core in my sophomore year at Stanford. He perplexed me before I even met him. For a biology course filled with gunning pre-meds, he assigned the entirety of Shakespeare's King Lear before his lectu...

Madelynn,

I think the best way to distinguish yourself from other applicants is to find something you're super passionate about and do it well. It can be pretty much anything, and doesn't necessarily have to be medical related. A lot of my classmates at Stanford med had done a lot of cool things prior to med school- they had taught elementary school, worked in clinics in Haiti, done their own research, sang opera, etc. Some did not ace their MCAT, but the school was willing to overlook that because of their life experiences. I think if you can find one project to dedicate yourself this is often more impressive to medical schools than doing several small things. Coming from Cornell, I have no doubt that you'll get into a great med school. Good luck to you!

Hi katherine, reading your posts inspire me more and more to go to medical school. I graduated from Cornell and medicine has always been a strong passion of mine. While at school I encountered difficulties and faced depression. I dont know how to integrate this into my personal statement or weather I should at all? I also wanted to figure out a way to message you privately but couldn't, is there anyway for me to converse with you privately?

The 10 Fundamental Laws of Night Call for Residents
1. The Law of Admissions The probability of admissions between the hours of 2 am and 6 am is 100%. 2. The Law of Sleep The probability of getting paged or called between the hours of 2am and 6am is an uncertainty until the resident's head touches a pillow. ...

Halfway done with intern year!
Whoa, that went pretty quickly.  Today marks the halfway point of my intern year.  I'm still alive, and in fact, I've still got some gas in the tank. If residency were a marathon, I'd be 4.37 miles into it. If residency were an Ironman, I'd be 23.4 miles in...
