How do nerve blocks effect migraine headaches? Why do some doctors use Botox for migraine headaches? How are the nerve block injection techniques different when done by a neurologist vs. a migraine surgeon? These are all very important and often misunderstood questions. Dr. Lowenstein discusses nerve injections, nerve blocks, the use of Botox, and their relationships to migraine surgery at Migraine Surgery of Southern California in his blog here...

In the treatment of migraine headaches, there is often confusion in the difference between nerve stimulators and migraine surgery. Nerve stimulators are placed in migraine patients to try to over-ride distress signals from particular nerves back to the brain. Migraine surgery uses microsurgical techniques to relieve pressure on the nerve itself, preventing the distress signals from happening in the first place. Placement of nerve stimulators can be less precise than migraine surgery in localizing the nerve because, in migraine surgery, Dr. Lowenstein actually finds and exposes the problematic nerve. When placing a nerve stimulator the leads may be near rather than on the nerve. This may be a reason for "lead reposition" and failure of nerve stimulators.
Patients who have migraine surgery at Migraine Surgery of Southern California frequently have a history of a failed nerve stimulator. To find out more information about this topic, see Dr. Lowenstein's blog at https://www.headachesurgery.com/migraine-surgery-is-not-the-same-as-a-nerve-simulator/

Do you get a migraine the morning after bad dreams? Some patients have concerns that a migraine causes bad dreams, but Dr. Lowenstein suspects otherwise. Read about the correlation between a bad night's sleep and having migraine headaches in this blog by Dr. Lowenstein.
