Great vibe and nice outdoor seating in a garden. Food wasn't daring, but simple and very good. Mexican iced coffee was superb, as well as breakfast taco #1.

I've heard the breakfast tacos are great, but I haven't branched out from the tamales in the three times I've been here because I like them so much. The pork tamales are my favorite, and the prices are very reasonable (two filling tamales are around $5, and I believe the breakfast tacos are just a little over $1 each). The staff is very friendly, and service is usually pretty quick.

Hi Madeline! Thank you so much for the five star review! Glad to hear the pork tamale is your favorite. It is our grandmother's recipe from the Original a Tamale House opened in 1958! When you are ready to branch out, we are sure that you will find some other yummy options. Carmen & the Valera boys

Breakfast tacos were DELISH! Super simple but really hit the spot. GET the horchata coffee thing. I love cold brew iced coffee and horchata so it was the perfect combination! I'll be back to eat tamales and breakfast, obvs~

Thanks Sujin, We cold brew the coffee here in house for the Mexican Iced Coffee and we use a local, organic roaster right here in the neighborhood. We look forward to seeing you soon, obvs! Carmen & Co.

This location is more upscale than the original location, and definitely belongs on the East Side. Alot of the basic tacos are the same as the old location but they have some new, creative tacos and plates as well. A must is the chicken mole tacos (and I'm really picky about my mole) and the mexican iced coffee. You're welcome.

Erin, Thank you so much for your review. We definitely like to have a mix of the classic family recipes from the Original Tamale House on 1st & Congress as well as some new dishes and specials. The grilled mole taco is one of my favorites to. You can also get mole enchiladas and mole on your tamale as well, I think it pairs especially well with the chicken tamale. Also thank you for mentioning the ice coffee. We cold brew it in house and it is local, organic and fair trade coffee beans. Again, thank you for taking the time to write your review, we appreciate it. Best, Carmen, Robert, Juan, Jose & Colombina

I came here for breakfast today and had the Huevos Rancheros with fried egg over easy and a side of potatoes and beans. It was all very good. I got there first thing in the morning on a Saturday, very little crowd. The place inside looks pretty darn cool, you will feel like you just stepped into a different country. I will be going back, I need to try out more whats on the menu.

Best fish taco in Austin! There are a lot of other things to like: their own parking lot from the East 6th entrance, reasonably priced and delicious breakfast and lunch items, cute dog friendly patio, relaxed friendly atmosphere. I just wished they were open later than 3pm.
Response from the owner - 6 months ago
Hi Laarni, Happy you like the fish taco. You are in good company, Texas Monthly just named it one of the best tacos around. We agree the neighborhood is great and we love keeping it 78702 local when we go out too. As for the hours, we will hopefully be extending them soon. Carmen & the Valera boys

This is my go to place when I am on the East Side. Carmen and the staff are family and treat you well. They have solid food at an affordable price. Plus some local craft can beer to boot. Wifi and a beautiful patio. Love this place.
