It takes practice and attention to keep negative stress from undermining our happiness and health. When a situation or person in our lives is the source of the negative stress the best defense is self-care. Self-care takes endless forms and begins with this thought:

“What positive, kind, and loving action can I do for myself now?”

Taking self-care action is a way to build your confidence, affirm your self-perception and reclaim your energy. Finding out what works best for you takes experimentation. As you discover your reliable self-care practices, turn these into habits.

Writing can become a powerful habit and self-care practice. Studies show that keeping a journal of what is going well in your life boosts immunity and increases a sense of wellbeing.

Research shows that there are healing effects from writing out painful feelings and deepest thoughts for 15 to 20 minutes a day for 3 to 5 consecutive days. This process allows feelings to surface and action plans to develop. Writers have improved moods, less pain and a more positive outlook.

Dream journals can take the form of a record of images that occur while we sleep or, of our conscious goals and desires.

Writing opens the door to the three essentials for health and well-being:
self-acceptance, self-appreciation and self-love.

MUSIC and SELF-CARE

Research shows that listening to particular types of music changes the way we perceive and experience the world. Scientists in the Netherlands found that listening to a song like Bill Withers’ “Lovely Day” or Patty Griffen’s “Heavenly Day” primes us for positive experience.

Music matters to our health and wellbeing. Music enters our nervous system through the auditory brainstem and stimulates our cerebellum, releases dopamine (the feel good neurotransmitter) and improves our immune response.

Gift yourself with self-care time to make your personal playlists for priming your day, improving your sense of well-being, reducing stress, focusing attention and maintaining a positive outlook. Music is personal. When you find yourself exposed to sound or music that is disturbing to you it is important to press the pause button before it causes a stress response.

Select your music based on the feelings it evokes in you.

Create a personal vision board that sends you reminders and keeps you connected to what is most important in your life.
