Anytime we can get a fossil like this that is so well preserved, and so significant in understanding a major environmental transition, it is very important,” says Norell. “It’s so important,” he adds, “that we can consider Vadasaurus to be the Archaeopteryx of rhynchocephalians.

A great article by +Kate Stone about an exciting fossil specimen. Bonus points: there's also a picture of a distant relative from the same family, which lives in New Zealand.

Also please congratulate me on my self control at not making any Star Wars / Vader puns. :-)

Erupting star V838 Monocerotis

The Hubble Space Telescope's latest image of the star V838 Monocerotis (V838 Mon) reveals dramatic changes in the illumination of surrounding dusty cloud structures.

The effect, called a light echo, has been unveiling never-before-seen dust patterns ever since the star suddenly brightened for several weeks in early 2002.

Polyana...
What is this?

This is what baffled both physicists and ice scientists alike. The mysterious formation, known as polynia, has appeared after four decades.

More on this is here:
