Dwarf Iris

The crocus have bloomed and the yard is full of daffodils. Also an early bloomer is a little patch of dwarf iris. This one was photographed a couple of days ago on a very foggy morning, during which everything was dripping wet from condensation.

Maples in Bloom
Among the first plants to wake up for the approaching spring are the maple trees with their tiny blossoms. Soon our gutters will be full of those little "flying seeds." :-)

1937 Flood
People still talk about this event. Thanks +WPSD-TV!
Our photojournalists have put together videos from the 1937 flood in Paducah. The Ohio River crested at just over 60 feet in Paducah, inundating many homes and businesses that were left accessible only by boat.

Crepe Myrtle
Lagerstroemia

If you're lucky enough to live in a climate where the crepe myrtle will grow then you know what a beautiful plant it is. But do you ever give it more than a passing glance in the wintertime? If you haven't then here is an example of what you've been missing.

More on Krita
I recently posted about Krita, a free Photoshop alternative*. I gave it a try yesterday and couldn't get it to work properly on my Windows 7 laptop. The response was extremely sluggish, and acted as if there was an incompatibility with the video adapter (Intel i7-2640M with on-board video). However, when I rebooted into my Linux (Ubuntu 16.04) partition on the same laptop and installed Krita it worked perfectly. [???] It appears to be a very powerful and feature-rich program and I definitely recommend giving it a try if you are in need of something like this.
Also of note -- I plugged in my Huion pen tablet and it works just fine, including properly sensing pen pressure. Yes, that's right, "It Just Works." No need to install a driver.

*From the Krita website: "As you learn about Krita, keep in mind that it is not intended as a replacement for Photoshop. This means that the other programs may have more features than Krita for image manipulation tasks, such as stitching together photos, while Krita's tools are most relevant to digital painting, concept art, illustration, and texturing. This fact accounts for a great deal of Krita's design."

Crocus
A sunny day in early February and time to check the crocus to see if they are blooming.

Why, yes they are!

Helleborus
Helleborus x hybridus
The helleborus (Lenten rose) often flowers in late winter, and thanks to the warm weather lately ours has started blooming. I brought this blossom into my little lighting stage and fired a single, diffused, off-camera flash to fill the stage with light and create some very soft shadows.
