The open kitchen at this upscale "diner" works with ingredients ranging from bologna to foie gras.- Google
"Had the chopped chicken I've ever had."
"The roasted bone marrow is one of my favorite things to get there."

Chicago Bar Bracket

I know this really isn't a bar, but I went here as part of the Chicago Bar Bracket - an NCAA style tournament to find the best bar in Chicago. While not much of a bar, it was better than the other bar we went to that night, but I don't want to detract from how good Au Cheval was by bashing on another bar. Most of us came out for the drinks and stuck to their small but excellent craft cocktail menu. The drinks were delicious, but (and this is in no way an insult to the drinks), were nowhere near how good the food was. The only downside to Au Cheval is that it's small and there's a bit of a wait. However, I think if you're in the Chicago area then coming here for a meal is a must. Easily 5 stars and excited to come back in the future.

Food was delicious. We had the chili con carne w/ corn chips, and the cheeseburgers with fries. If it was based off the food only, this would be 5 stars. The service was horrible. And I mean not even close to being good. Took someone about 20 minutes to greet us at the bar. Once seated, took another 30 minutes for our server to come over and say hi. There was a host/hostess that was friendly, but another one who was extremely rude. I don't get why the service was so terrible. Yes, the place is very busy, but it's a small place. I understand if something may take awhile to come out, but communicate that to me. I'd recommend the food, but only if you could do take out. Not worth coming in to eat.

I gotta say, this place is top notch. Been here 3 times. Burger, chiliquiles, muffin, hash with duck gravy, omelette...all amazing. They do it right. Excellent ingredients and execution. Oh, it's always busy.

So I have read countless reviews that this has the best burger in town. And there are some phenomenal burger places in Chicago. However, this truly is the cream of the crop. Worth a wait no matter what.

Nike and I came here one day for a late dinner. The place was packed but we were able to get a table fairly quickly. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. We both ordered the omelette with kale, oyster mushrooms, and morel jack cheese. The eggs were silky and glistened in the candlelight. Each bite was a bit of sweet heaven and made me think of a simpler time. The smashed potatoes with roasted garlic gravy...words..can't be formed to describe the ecstasy I was in after eating this. Hands down one of the BEST potato dish I ever eaten, heck I am salivating just thinking about it. My only qualm, is they had a some more vegetarian or poultry/seafood dishes.

One of my favorite spots for lunch in Chicago's West Loop. The hamburger is an epic experience and, for my money, the best burger in Chicago. You can't go wrong with the fries either, which come with an incredible aioli dipping sauce. I'd recommend trying to arrive early, however, as they do not accept reservations, and there always seems to be a crowd.

Au Cheval never disappoints. We love griddle-style burgers and their burgers are one of the best in the city. This is one of the very few places on Randolph where I don't feel like I am paying an exorbitant amount of money for great tasting food. In reference to the quality of food served here, the prices are reasonable. Expect a wait on most nights and make sure you don't make the trip down there during the in between lunch and dinner breaks. Lastly, just put the egg on the burger- you won't regret it.

OMG I can't stop thinking about that burger! Was a bit packed early and long wait times. I saddled up to the bar and took a bit to get noticed before my order was taken. Fix that and get the extra star!
