Magnetrons have powered microwave ovens since Percy Spencer accidently invented them at Raytheon in 1945. We take these appliances for granted even though they can’t do much more than heat coffee, explode popcorn kernels, heat up premade meals, and defrost foods. That’s about to change, if not immediately, then certainly in the next five years, as microwave ovens become true cooking appliances, as RF power transistors replace the magnetrons as their RF power source.

However, solid-state devices represent a new frontier and one that appliance manufacturers aren’t familiar with, which is precisely the situation that the RF Energy Alliance is helping to change.

Solid-state cooking may sound mouth-watering but don’t expect to find these appliances for sale during this year’s holiday season as they’re not fully cooked yet. They’re more than a design concept, though, and manufacturers simply need time to perfect them before releasing them into the commercial market.

Panasonic has developed a special lens which improves the radial sensitivity of pyroelectric PIR sensors.

The wide-angle models in the EKMCxxx and EKMBxxx PaPIR sensor families featuring the patented lens are intended for use in both wired and battery-powered applications. The superior optical characteristics of the new lens give a large detection angle of 150° horizontal x 35° vertical.

Pyroelectric PIR sensors use lenses to direct incoming heat radiation to the sensor elements. If an object with a temperature that differs from that of the surroundings moves into the detection area, the sensor reacts. Parameters such as the ambient temperature and the size, speed and direction of movement of the object influence the response time and the detection distance of the sensor.

An inherent feature of pyroelectric PIR sensors is that tangential movements, at a 90° angle to the sensor, are easier to detect than radial movements. This means that the detection distance is smaller if the object moves towards the sensor. Panasonic’s new wide-angle lens has the effect of increasing sensitivity to radial movements.

Wide-angle versions of the EKMCxxx and EKMBxxx products are available with a digital output, and with a stand-by current rating of 1μA, 2μA, 6μA or 170μA.

The VOF family of open-frame AC-DC power supplies from +CUI Inc provide continuous power from 180W to 550W, housed in compact, low-profile packages with a power density up to 30W/in³. Supplies are available with a fixed output at common voltages from 12V to 58VDC and include a separate 12V, 0.5A fan output. They have a low standby power consumption of less than 0.5W and achieve up to 94% conversion efficiency. These AC-DC power supplies provide space and energy saving benefits for ITE, industrial, and consumer electronics applications. VOF power supplies have multiple safety approvals, operate from a wide universal input voltage range of 80V to 264VAC with integrated power factor correction and input fuse, and have a wide operating temperature of -40°C to +70°C.

Low-power PCB relays are available from +TE Connectivity (TE) with one or two poles and maximum contact ratings ranging from 3A to 16A. This means that they can be used to meet a variety of isolated switching requirements in the control circuits in intelligent buildings.

Relays with a high 16A contact rating include the 0410 83, a board-mount, 1 Form X relay which offers a contact gap of more than 3mm. Also offering a 16A rating are the OMIH, which offers 5kV of contact-to-coil isolation, and the RT and RZ series, which include models rated for operation at high temperatures.

TE also supplies the RT (Inrush) relay, which is rated for a 16A maximum current in normal operation, but which can withstand an inrush current of up to 80A. The RTX model can withstand inrush currents of up to 320A.

New bus bar power connectors and cable assemblies from +TE Connectivity (TE) offer lower power consumption in power-distribution applications when used to provide a connection either for the power supply or for a back-up battery.

Suitable for use in telecoms and networking equipment, the bus bar connectors and cable assemblies conform to the specifications set for Open Compute Project (OCP) applications. They can also be used in products in which a 150A or 500A connection is needed.

These TE bus bar connectors and cable assemblies feature a low-cost, robust design which offers low contact resistance and better heat dissipation than other power products currently in the market. By cutting power losses and improving power consumption, these connectors can help to reduce the cost of data-center operations. In addition, the same connector can be used for either 12V or 48V power and for either power or return.

The new PushPull SFP XS fibre-optic connector from +HARTING Ltd is designed to address the biggest challenge to the use of optical connectors in industry: their susceptibility to dirt and damage to the contact surfaces forming the interface with the transceiver which converts the optical signal into an electrical signal.

Contamination in this area can result in poor or useless signals, but the HARTING PushPull SFP XS connectors do not suffer from this problem. They can be easily and quickly connected to a transceiver pre-assembled on site without having to open the optical link. The optical contacts are protected, even in dirty operating environments, to guarantee a clean signal.

Another key feature of the PushPull SFP XS connector is its sophisticated locking mechanism. Despite the compact design, the connector is compatible with various transceiver lengths. It also gives clear tactile and acoustic feedback to the user to indicate a secure connection. As a result, it provides a safe and trouble-free transmission solution for fibre-optic communication in harsh environments.

The HARTING PushPull SFP XS is ideally suited to use in industrial fibre-optic systems involving data transmission rates of more than 10Gbit/s or distances of well over 100 meters. +Nexperia has released the latest product in its NextPower family of gate-drive MOSFETs.

The PSMN8R5-100PSF is a 100V gate-drive MOSFET which is qualified for operation at temperatures up to 175°C. Featuring a maximum drain current of 98A, it is intended for use in industrial and consumer applications.

The PSMN8R5-100PSF is suitable for use as the power switch in the synchronous rectification circuit in both AC-DC and DC-DC converters, in which its support for fast switching and low spiking are valuable. It can also be used in full-bridge and half-bridge power circuits, and in power converters based on flyback or resonant topologies.

The device has a low reverse-recovery charge for low body-diode losses, and offers fast reverse-recovery times.

The PSMN8R5-100PSF MOSFET’s figure of merit – the product of gate charge and on-resistance – is also low, helping users to achieve high efficiency in switching power converters.

Nexperia has also recently introduced the PSMN018-100PSF, another 100V gate-drive MOSFET. It has a maximum drain current of 53A.

The HMC7885 from +Analog Devices, Inc. is a 32W Gallium Nitride (GaN), Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit (MMIC) power amplifier (PA) module that operates between 2GHz and 6GHz, and is provided in an 18-lead hermetically sealed module. The amplifier typically provides 21dB of small signal gain and 45dBm of saturated radio frequency (RF) output power. The amplifier draws 2200mA of quiescent current (IDD) from a 28V DC supply. The RF input and output are DC blocked and matched to 50Ω for ease of use.

The HMC8205BF10 from +Analog Devices, Inc. is a Gallium Nitride (GaN) broadband power amplifier delivering 45.5dBm (35W) with 38% Power Added Efficiency (PAE) across an instantaneous bandwidth of 0.3GHz to 6GHz.
