There are a few very disturbing inaccuracies in this review that we would like to point out.

We will explain more below but want to point out that no tenant reported any bed bugs in the home before their arrival and once treated there has been no reports. The tenant did admit they had bed bugs at their residence in the past so I am sure they understand how easily these are transmitted.

We have no record of a Rebecca Slaughter even staying with us, we are assuming her husband has a different last name and booked the reservation in his name. The only remote situation that she could be referring to is explained below and happened in June 2015.


We did have a tenant this summer report bed bugs. We sent two staff members from the office to inspect the claim. The specimens were not available to be viewed at the time and the staff members inspected the bed. They found nothing.

The owner of the Lewis Realty (Chris) was in a meeting and when the meeting ended, he personally went to inspect again. The gentleman was there with the specimens and Chris immediately identified them as a likely case of bed bugs. Chris himself then inspected the bedding but again found no live bed begs. One of the tenants themselves (the elder gentleman) inspected as well with Chris present and found none.   

Chris asked the tenant to leave the specimens in the bottle at the original home so the pest control company could view them and to not infect another home.

The local pest control company came out and inspected yet again. He found no bed bugs whatsoever in the bedding. He was unable to view the specimens because the tenant "forgot" he had them and took them to the rental they were being moved to.

The pest company did find one bed beg on a comforter the tenants had removed from the bed. The home was treated and given a total clean bill of health.

Chris then visited the new rental after several phone calls to obtain the specimen (so as to not infect the other home). The tenants did not seem willing to give up their specimens. Chris personally visited the property and was able to obtain the specimens, again, to keep from running the risk of infecting another property. 

Lewis Realty takes several precautions regarding bed bugs:
We require the owners of our homes to use bed bug proof bedding covers and have trained housekeepers to identify them. These are precautions and failsafes to help in the event bed bug are introduced into a home. 

If someone tells you they can prevent bed bugs, they are lying. Vacation rental homes have people coming from all over the world, many of whom have stayed in hotels and possibly could introduce them into the home with out any one knowing until it's too late. All anyone can do is work to lessen their impact if they do occur.

We do close at 4 pm. If you have a scheduled early check in we do charge for it. Why? Because it takes much logistics and many times higher cleaning costs to have a family check out at 10 am and a new family check in at 1 pm. It is not easy, if it was, everyone would do this.  However, any time a unit is ready before 3 pm, we call the tenants (if they are already in town) to let them know they can check in at no extra charge.

You do not have to wait until Monday for issues. We have a 24/7 day a week emergency line as well as a 24/7 house keeping line. 

Bryson and Associates did not close, Lewis Realty bought the company. In all honesty, Lewis Realty was double the age of Bryson and owned by a local who has lived in the Topsail area his whole life. It's a bit puzzling to think that a guest thinks that Lewis Realty is responsible for destroying Topsail Island!!

There was beach renourishment taking place in North Topsail Beach. It was largely paid for by the tax payers of North Topsail Beach so it is their right to do so to protect their property. The grey pipe referenced above was pumping sand from off shore  . . . natural sand . . made by the ocean which regularly moves sand from the beach into the ocean and back again. There is nothing destructive about it - just doing what natures does anyways. (man does do it at a faster pace though and a controlled result).

As for the wine, yeah, we regularly offer wine to our guests. I have no idea what the reviewer is referring to about one flavor or another. If she needed two bottles of wine, I am sure we would have obliged!

We did as well give her a gift card to Sear's Landing. 

And again, covered the costs of the upgrade to the oceanfront unit.

So with all this said, we treated them wrong and deserve one star? Not surprised, this reviewer only leaves negative reviews (yes, you too can look at that). If things were perfect, we would have never heard from her. I am not sure of this tenant's motives to leave a review like this months after the situation but it does seem a bit odd. 

The situation was not pleasant for anyone. We handled it with professionalism and saved these tenant's vacation.
