Ad Lib Adventures. Ad Lib adventures follow a fill-in-the-blank approach. Start the game without planning. Read the setup to the players. Ask questions and use the answers to collaboratively build the adventure. Usually it is best if you just ask one question at a time.

Continuing my series on low-prep RPG games, this evening I'll talk about Villain Flashback and Custer's Last Stand techniques. Villain Flashback. Start the game with an unexplained battle. Perhaps the villains ambush the PCs. Maybe you set up the scene as the players attacking the villains in ...

Good stuff!
One really easy to run format is a Triggered Mission. These games follow this format: Opening Mission — Initial scene where the PCs are assigned a mission. It could be to fight an evil villain in his lair, rescue someone, or pull off a heist. The key concept is there is a location that the PCs ...

Nice ideas!
Wanted to show you how I manage maps in my campaign. I buy high-res maps, resize to 18x24”, print for cheap via http://OvernightPrints.com and mount in cheap poster frame, and I transport such maps in an art satchel. See below for details. I buy cheap 18x24" poster frames for about $7 from ...

Many folks who have visited my gameroom and played tabletop RPGs like D&D and Traveller with me have remarked on my table setup. It's easy to deconstruct and reconfigure the room to instead setup a folding ping-ping table or put down an inflatable bed if we have guests. It's also big enough they ...

I'm writing a series on ways to run a game with little or no prep. Published adventures with dozens of pages may take hours to read. Writing your own adventure from scratch can also take a significant time investment. What about when you want to run a game, but have little time to prepare?

Ask for a volunteer who is willing to narrate a bit of background story for a reward (be it experience points, a Fate Point, or D&D 5e Inspiration). Have the player roll a d4 and then spend a few minutes thinking up and then narrating the backstory type they've rolled.

Continuing my series on low-prep RPG games, this morning I'll talk about the Fantastic Four technique. One great way to get player-generated ideas for adventures and campaigns is to ask the Fantastic Four questions. Hand out four cards to each of your players. Each card should have one to three ...

Going to totally use this!
A Bullet Campaign is a format where you take a villain, determine their diabolical goal, then list out a few bullet points of steps they'll take in executing their plan. It works great for high level campaigns, but works for adventures as well. Here's an example of an adventure written in about ...

My daughter is part of the initial class of students for this excellent school. SAMI is an experiment by the successful team that built School of the Arts (SOTA), which my son attended. These two schools are perhaps some of the best public schools in Washington State, if not the country. Small classes, experimental programs focused on students doing, learning, experiencing, helping each other while led and instructed by motivated and smart teachers. Classes are held in the park, at the zoo, on the shore, in addition to the many classrooms. These kids get wet hiking trails while identifying native and invasive species. They get sand on their knees while gathering samples from the Puget Sound to examine in the classroom later. They build unique and creative projects, and are truly treated like the individual students they are.
