Feeling contemplative in the New Year? Take a moment to ponder your place in the universe, brought to you by this stunning footage of the Milky Way passing over UT's McDonald Observatory in West Texas. Visitors to the observatory (450 miles from Austin) can tour massive telescopes and attend the famous Star Parties under some of the darkest night skies in the continental United States. Waaaaay #HiddenUT

So cute!
'Twas the week before Christmas
and high over the comet
Rosetta was happy – she knew Philae was on it.
The lander was sleeping, a crater his bed,
While visions of perihelion danced in his head.
He'd done his job well, he fulfilled every goal.
(It's not easy to land on a place darker than coal!)
And although he's gone quiet, his work nicely done,
Philae may wake again as his world nears the Sun.
So this holiday gaze up at the stars overhead,
And give thanks to the robots who explore in our stead!

Happy Holidays from Rosetta and Philae (with an adorable card from the +European Space Agency, ESA and a little poem by yours truly!)

Happy Veterans/Remembrance Day! Thanks to all of those who have served, do serve, and will serve. My traditional thing to post today - the poignant ending of Blackadder Goes Fourth.

I was so thrilled to wake up to this news this morning! She is such an amazing young woman!
Malala Yousafzai becomes the youngest person ever to win the Nobel Peace prize. http://bbc.in/1nfrwZ4

She was catapulted to international fame after being shot by the Taliban in Pakistan - because of her campaign for girls' education. Malala wins the prize jointly with Indian child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi
