My name is Omar Ali Amir: I’m based in Zanzibar, Tanzania. My interest is in the conservation and management of whales, dolphins and other endangered species of Zanzibar. I’m also interested in management of whale and dolphin tourism and its governance, in Zanzibar, including the economic benefits of the industry as well as social construction and appraisal of tourist experience. I obtained my PhD in Animal Ecology from Stockholm University in Sweden in 2010. My PhD project was on the biology, ecology and anthropogenic threats of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins in east Africa (Zanzibar, Tanzania). For the last 2 years, I’ve been helping the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, Tanzania to establish regulations for whale and dolphin watching in Zanzibar.
