BALTIMORE TRAFFIC ACCIDENT FATALITIES RISE: According to NHTSA, Baltimore City recorded 41 motor vehicle crash-related fatalities in 2016, up from 28 deaths in 2012. In surrounding Baltimore County, 55 motor vehicle accident-related deaths occurred in 2016, down from 68 fatalities in 2012. Driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding account for a significant number of these deaths.

Last year, Maryland became one of 28 states requiring anyone cited for driving under the influence to use an ignition interlock device—not just repeat offenders. A study by Johns Hopkins University says that more lives are saved when everyone convicted of drunk driving uses the breathalyzer devices. The expanded Maryland law is part of Noah's Law, which was passed in 2016 after a police officer was killed by a drunk driver.
