Raye Montague made up her mind about her career when she was seven years old. Her grandfather took her to see a one-person submarine captured from the Germans, and when she was looking inside of it, she knew exactly what she was going to do when she grew up. "I always knew I wanted to build ships."

And she did. As soon as she graduated from college she left her hometown in Arkansas for Washington, DC, so she could get a job with the Navy. She worked her way up the ranks building ships, and breaking down barriers.

She started out as a computer systems operator, but kept pushing to advance. And advance she did! She found ways around all the roadblocks set up to hold her back because of her race and her gender. She earned her Registered Professional Engineer license and spend her days (and many nights and weekends) working on the navy's computers, teaching herself the new technology.

When President Nixon wanted to see plans for a new ship in two months, no one thought it was possible. Until then, new designs took months to draft by hand. But they turned to Raye and asked her if she had any ideas. She did: computers. Her bosses gave her one month to prove it was possible to use computers to design a ship. She came back with a rough draft in less than a week. And in the process created the first computer design system for building ships.

She was born on this date in 1935.

i really hope it's worth the cost for the people that felt they needed to vote for this monster (directly or indirectly) to shake things up.

I think we the people should be angrier yet, because we have paid and continue to pay for these people to be paid for the services they provide. Pres. Trump is playing with we the people's money, and he needs to get himself right about what he's doing.

Some peace history for 1/21 (and, if you click through, you can scroll up for 1/20; I didn't get it posted last night.)

>January 21, 1661
The Quaker (Society of Friends) Peace Testimony was presented to King Charles II of England. The testimony begins: "We utterly deny all outward wars and strife and fightings with outward weapons, for any end or under any pretence whatsoever. And this is our testimony to the whole world....”<

>January 21, 1954
The first atomic-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus, built by Electric Boat Company, was launched at Groton, Connecticut. All previous submarines were powered by batteries which had to be periodically recharged by diesel-powered generators which could only run if the sub surfaced.
The nuclear power plant, developed under the leadership of Captain Hyman Rickover, and its ability to produce its own fresh water, allowed Nautilus and its successors to remain underwater and undetectable for weeks rather than hours. It carried only conventional torpedoes.
It has been completely restored and can be seen at the Submarine Force Museum in Groton.<

>January 21, 1977
The day after his inauguration President Jimmy Carter declared an unconditional amnesty for draft resisters, both the accused and those who might have faced possible prosecution.<

>January 21, 1984
A Women’s Peace Camp was set up near Volkel Airbase in The Netherlands to protest siting of U.S. nuclear weapons there.<
