Revolutionary Russia was hardly a human rights paradise. But, for years, the USSR provided a disincentive to capitalist exploitation of workers in underdeveloped nations. Capitalist corporations were reticent to spread into underdeveloped nations given the fear that workers in those nations, if mistreated, would support communist insurgency. With the downfall of the USSR, that counterweight is gone. Big business has expanded unimpeded into tiny nations where they can under-pay and over-work their employees. Of course, the solution does not involve a return to a human rights abusive Soviet government. Democratic nations need to monitor the abuse of workers and provide a check on corporate power. Read-on for some ideas on how this might work; and feel free to share your own.
