Client service: Jorge the manager was an absolute jerk. I'm trying not to lose my temper when recollecting the quality of customer service but I'm still upset by his horrendous service. ...Part 1.) We arrive early in the day and call asking for an early check in *Check in at resort is a ridiculous 4 pm. We are told that we should have a room at 3 pm. We arrive at 3 pm and are told that the front desk will call us when our room is ready. They give us parking validation and fail to inform us that clients using their resort will be charged 17$/Night. We go to the near empty restaurant, receive unremarkable service. Part 2.) 4 PM and no call. We move to the front desk and hear the attendant "M...J..." professionally and politely informing the couple ahead of us that their room will be ready momentarily. He has no record of our early check in and asks us to wait. Meanwhile the couple behind us is told that their room won't be ready for another half hour. This "Resort" is not only charging for parking on its lot but also charging full price for a 4:30 check in to 12 PM check out. Part 3.) We arrive at the room, discover its sorry state, malfunctioning phone and return to front requesting refund. Nicky, polite associate M...J..., and a large aggressive manager are at the front. M...J... is telling a client that their room isn't ready, Nicky smiles at all and attempts to promote professionalism while informing Jorge the manager that a client's credit information has been sent to the wrong person. Jorge rolls his eyes at this and wonders if such a concern is a big deal. My wife approaches the front desk and attempts to get Jorge's attention. He tells her that she'll need to wait and then presents the most patronizing, aggressively sexist tone that I have heard in some time. Jorge will not refund our money as it went through Orbitz. He tells her, and incredibly successful woman, that she needs to calm down and that he can't produce any paperwork requesting a refund/asking orbitz for a refund. He tells her this while assuring us that he will personally see to a refund after we leave--- with no written record or promissory note. I step in and demand that the hotel not only refund the money, but that he produce something in writing that will expedite the refund process should he prove difficult and we returned home after vacation. Dealing with a man he changes his tone and attempts to tell me that he has no way of producing documentation. That is until we request his superiors name. Then we are given a print out without charges. The print out says that we checked in on the 24th and left on the 25th. The sheer unprofessional nature of the cleaning crew, the office staff, and the management was monstrous and left a sour taste in my mouth. We did end up receiving our money back, and spent the day at the W hotel. An equally priced hotel with impeccable service. I highly recommend their downtown office as an alternative to this...resort. Heck, I recommend a Motel 6. Jorge the Asst. Manager needs to be coached in communication and hospitality. Nicky did a good job attempting to keep angry clients calm, but should work on his facial expressions which fail to hide his annoyance. The associate M...J... was quite good. The female, slightly larger latina at the front desk (who told us that she'd call when our room was ready) needs to work on her follow through.

We recently had a destination wedding ceremony and reception at Kona Kai in early April 2015. After visiting the property on a whim for a Valentine’s Day weekend getaway in 2014, we met with Michael DaSilva (Catering Sales Manager) toured the property and discussed wedding packages. After researching options in both our hometowns (Dallas, TX and Pittsburgh, PA) it was actually less expensive for us to book with Kona Kai, because they had some more intimate areas on property that did not carry such a large food & beverage minimum. The property does have a LARGE ballroom that can be utilized for larger weddings, but we were expecting only 40 – 60 guests. The day of the wedding was smooth, organized and most of all – absolutely BEAUTIFUL! The vendors and hotel staff worked together well and went above and beyond my expectations. The hotel has recently undergone an extensive renovation and is under new ownership – but you wouldn’t know it as the staff and service provided was superior. The food at the onsite restaurant Vessel is always delicious and all of our wedding guests were raving about how amazing the plated dinners were at our reception. We even had a special prix fixe menu for a Sunday “Farewell Brunch” and again the catering staff went out of their way to make sure it was special and delicious! Lastly, the actual rooms are a bit small, but that is simply how the building was originally designed. The beds are VERY comfortable and the renovations to the bathrooms are well done. One tip – the hotel is finishing up the last of their room renovations, so if that is important to you, be sure to request a newly renovated room upon booking. Also, you can’t go wrong with a view from either side of the property – to the East you have the bay and downtown skyline views with morning sunrise, and to the West you have a cool Marina view and sunsets over Point Loma. All in all, I would highly recommend Kona Kai especially if you are looking for an event or wedding venue.

We had 3 rooms in the newly remodeled Kona Kai Resort and Marina in San Diego for my grandson's graduation from the Marines bootcamp. My wife and I travel extensively and I must say that this resort was fantastic.. Nicky and Dawson were the best desk clerks' I've ever been associated with. Especially Nicky, who addressed everybody by name such as Mr. or Mrs. "last name". The hotel is going through an extensive remodeling so be sure to ask for a newly remodeled room when making arrangements. The Vessel bar/restaurant has happy hour each day between 4 and 6 with reduced wine, some cocktails and reduced menu on some food items. Unfortunately, the beer prices were not reduced, which I don't understand why not. All the happy hour food was delicious and the drinks were cold. The view from the rooms and the restaurant were beautiful. We went to Sea World for a day and bought reduced priced tickets from the desk clerk for 5 of us from a 3rd party Company via internet. When we got to Sea World we found out our recent graduating Marine gets free tickets for himself and three friends or family members. So instead of using the voucher for 5 tickets from the hotel we were told to purchase 1 ticket from Sea World and ask for a credit back at the hotel. We had a blast at Sea World with all the rides and show's. When we got back I was told by the night desk clerk after a call the 3rd party Company that there were no returns on tickets but we could try calling during the day when the manager of the ticket company was available. I gave this project to Nicky, the day desk clerk, and ten minutes later he told me my $375 would be credited back to my credit card within 5-10 days. I would highly recommend the valet parking service as all the attendants were so friendly and polite. Overall our 5 days at this resort were unbelievable relaxing, enjoyable and pleasant. I would highly recommend it.

just saying that we went to Kona Kai for live music and cocktails on Friday night, as advertised, and we were very disappointed. The view was nice etc but the 50% happy hour beers ended up being $8 pint because they were not on the special list of Coors Light and Bud Light. Most expensive in town. The music was supposed to start at 6:00 but we left at 7:00 and the band had not even arrived. We can see paying the ultimate price for beers if the band is playing but this was very disappointing. We and our friend will not return for this rip off!!! Born and raised in San Diego and had my 10 year high school reunion here in 1979 so we were looking forward to coming back. Just so, so disappointed.

We're always sorry to hear when a visit misses the mark, as your happiness is absolutely critical to us. It's unfortunate that the band's delay impacted your experience as well, and I encourage you to reach out to me personally to further explore these concerns. It would be a pleasure to showcase our commitment to valued guests like yourself. Kindly, Rommel Gonzalez Hotel Manager

I just stayed there for my birthday and I loved it. From the beginning it was a great experience, staff was amazing very friendly extremely professional. the front desk lady even upgraded our room to beach front for free and gave us a complementary smores making kit and free appetizer at a local restaurant. later we asked someone in the staff as we walked around if we could get a wine opener and glasses to our room and by the time we walked back he personally delivered it. its very quiet and romantic. Definatly great for a getaway.
